As the cast of the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot stepped out at the Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday night, fans couldn’t help notice that two members of the original cult-favorite slasher film’s cast—Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Love Hewitt—kept their distance on the red carpet. Rumors of bad blood escalated when people noticed that the Buffy alum snubbed the newly red-haired Hewitt in a cast photo dump on Instagram, but the Ghost Whisperer star is clearing up feud rumors in a new interview.
In an interview with Vulture published on Friday, July 18, Hewitt admitted she was confused about the discourse that she and Gellar had a falling out, which dates back to the original ‘90s film. “I honestly don’t even know what that was or how that all came to be. I just think people don’t want the narrative to be easy. Why do we always have to be against each other and out for each other?” she said.

Instead, Hewitt attributed the co-stars’ distance to the fact that they haven’t kept in contact over the years and are no longer close. “I haven’t seen Sarah. Literally, we’ve not talked since I saw her at 18 years old when the first movie came out,” Hewitt told the publication.
Gellar, who starred in the original 1997 film alongside now-husband Freddie Prinze Jr. and Ryan Philippe, also headed to Instagram to share her side of the story after fans called her out for not posting any photos with Hewitt. “For everyone asking—I never got to see @jenniferlovehewitt who is fantastic in the movie,” she wrote in the comments section of her Instagram. She explained that she was inside with her kids while photos were being taken on the red carpet, and Hewitt was a no show at the cast after party.

“If you have ever been to one of these it’s crazy. I sadly didn’t get pics with most of the cast. But that doesn’t change how amazing I think they all are. Unfortunately some things happen only in real life and not online,” she wrote.

While Gellar and Hewitt didn’t get to have an OG I Know What You Did Last Summer red carpet reunion, both actresses stepped out in head-turning looks at the premiere. She paired a form-fitting black mirrored dress with a new copper-red hair color, swapping out her signature brunette strands for the bright red hue. Meanwhile, Gellar wore a 3D minidress that looked like purple butterflies in flight paired with a half-up blonde hairstyle while posing with Prinze Jr. on the red carpet.
