    • Meryl Streep and Don Gummer’s son Henry was born on November 13, 1979.
    • Their eldest daughter Mamie was born on August 3, 1983.
    • Little sisters Grace and Louisa arrived on May 9, 1986 and June 12, 1991, respectively.

Meryl Streep may play a fashionable villain in The Devil Wears Prada, but in real life she’s the proud mom of four children: Henry, Mamie, Grace, and Louisa. The Oscar-winning actress shares her kids with her husband Don Gummer. (In 2023, her reps confirmed to People that her and Gummer had separated more than six years prior). The couple met in 1978 and married just six months later at her parents’ home.

“There’s no road map on how to raise a family: It’s always an enormous negotiation,” the Mamma Mia actress told Vogue in 2002. “But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life. I can’t imagine eschewing one for the other.”

Streep and Gummer’s children arrived shortly after their nuptials. The couple’s eldest son Henry was born in 1979, followed by Mamie in 1983, Grace in 1986, and Louisa in 1991. The foursome spent their childhood away from the spotlight and Streep later credited this parenting strategy to fellow actor Robert Redford.

“Robert Redford taught me that when they were babies: ‘They are not your props.’ I really admired the way he protected his family,” she told Good Housekeeping in 2008. “It’s something I consciously emulated.”

As for her work-life balance, the Manhattan actress once admitted that parenthood proved to be much more difficult than acting.

“Acting—that’s praise, money, fulfillment,” she told The Washington Post. “Mothering—they don’t even say, ‘Thank you.’ There’s no comparison to acting. I can’t really call acting work, since it’s secretly so fun.”

In adulthood, Streep’s daughters have followed in her footsteps while her son has maintained a relatively private life. From grade school to grandkids, here’s everything you should know about Meryl Streep’s four kids: Henry, Mamie, Grace, and Louisa.

Henry Wolfe Gummer was born on November 13, 1979 in New York City. Unlike his younger sisters, Henry did not pursue a career in acting. After high school he attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 2002, per the school’s website. Streep’s eldest son has since become a musician. His most important piece of advice? “No music is uncool.”

“The music that meant most to me when I was young (like in grade school) continues to inform my songwriting,” he added in an interview with HuffPost.

Henry’s tracks have appeared in some of his mother’s movies, like Julie and Julia and Ricki and the Flash. He has also released two albums, Linda Vista (2011) and Asilomar (2015). That said, he has largely avoided the spotlight and rarely makes public appearances with his famous family.

In 2019, Henry married acupuncturist and herbalist Tamryn Storm Hawker. The duo have since welcomed two children: daughter Ida June Gummer, born in 2020, and son Quinn William Gummer, born in 2022.

Henry became a big brother with the arrival of Mary Willa “Mamie” Gummer on August 3, 1983. She was also born in New York City and attended boarding school in Connecticut before graduating from Northwestern University in 2005.

Streep’s eldest daughter followed in her footsteps and made her Broadway debut in 2008 with “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” at the American Airlines Theatre, per ABC News. During an interview with the publication, she opened up about what it was like working in Streep’s shadow.

“I understand the curiosity, and she’s an amazing lady,” she said. “It’s always been there, that shadow. It’s been a comforting presence. I feel like I’ve negotiated how to live with it.”

Before Broadway, Mamie’s first role was actually alongside her mother in the 1986 Nora Ephron classic Heartburn. She was just 20 months old at the time and was listed in the film’s credits under the pseudonym Natalie Stern to protect her identity, per IMDB. She has since appeared in TV shows like The Good Wife and True Detective, as well as movies like Evening and Ricki and the Flash.

“It was just that wonderful and wicked blend of dark humor and real heart,” she told Variety of the latter film. “I had the biggest grin on my face as I was reading it, and then it made me cry. And that’s why we do what we do.”

Mamie also told the publication that she is not intimidated by her mother; “Maybe I’m one of five people on the planet that wouldn’t be struck in that way, the rest being the other members of my family,” she said, adding, “But I’m intimidated by everyone else!”

In 2011, Mamie married fellow actor Ben Walker. The duo called it quits in 2013. She later found love with producer and writer Mehar Sethi, with whom she welcomed two children: Peter, born in 2019, and Mary, born in 2021, according to People. The couple wed the same month Peter arrived and separated in 2023. On February 7, 2025, Mamie filed for divorce from Sethi, per People.

    Grace Gummer

Streep and Gummer welcomed their second daughter, Grace Jane Gummer, on May 9, 1986. Like Henry and Mamie, she was also born in New York City. She attended her mother’s alma matter Vassar College and graduated with degrees in art history and Italian in 2008, according to the school’s website.

In 1993, Grace was cast to play a younger version of Streep in The House of the Spirits and named Jane Grey in the film’s credits in order to protect her identity, per IMDB. As an adult, she began her career in theatre with 2008’s “The Sexual Neuroses of Our Parents.”

“I wasn’t even planning on being in a play,” Grace told Vulture at the time. “I read [the script] thinking I was going to design for it, and then when I was done reading it, I was like, Well…”

Grace’s career on the big screen took off in 2012 with a role in Greta Gerwig’s mumblecore classic Frances Ha. She also played Katie Rand for two episodes of NBC’s Smash. She had recurring roles on shows like Extant, Mr. Robot, and American Horror Story, and plays Caroline Kennedy in Ryan Murphy’s drama American Love Story.

In 2019, Grace married musician and actor Tay Straithairn. The newlyweds separated after one month of marriage and finalized their divorce in 2020, per People. The following year, Grace confirmed her engagement to the DJ and record producer Mark Ronson. The couple secretly wed in August 2021.

“I hope I spend every one of these birthdays by your side til my last day. And beyond. Forever and ever yours ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ (and yes, we got married),” Ronson wrote in an Instagram post revealing the news, per People.

Grace and Ronson welcomed a baby girl named Ruthie two years after their nuptials. The DJ’s sister Annabelle Dexter-Jones confirmed the first baby’s arrival in an interview with People. “[Gummer] just had the baby. She’s two and a half months now,” she told the publication, adding, “She’s stunning.”

    Louisa Jacobson

Louisa Jacobson Gummer was born on June 12, 1991 in Los Angeles. The actress followed the lead of both Streep and Grace by attending Vassar College, and graduated with a degree in psychology in 2013, according to The New York Times. Like her mother, she also earned a master’s degree in acting from Yale’s acclaimed David Geffen School of Drama.

Louisa’s acting career began on stage. She adopted her middle name as her surname per Screen Actors Guild (SAG) rules that prevent actors from having same or similar names (there is another actress named Louisa Gummer). She acted in a number of plays and the TV show Gone Hollywood. Her big break came in 2022 with the premiere of The Gilded Age.

“I was really, really scared,” Jacobson told Elle of filming the first season of the period drama. “It was a challenge to get through. I was used to doing theater…it was new to me to be on a set. And with such a big role, I felt a lot of pressure.”

In 2022, Louisa revealed her unusual family nickname during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live: Pickle. She also told her host that her mom asks a lot of questions.

“Even today, she was like, ‘All right, Pickle, is the car coming for you?’ She’s like, ‘Do you have everything you need? Is someone coming to pick you up from the theater?'” Louisa said. “I’m like, ‘Yeah, Mom. I have it under control.’ She’s like, ‘OK, yeah. Enough from me. Enough from me.'”

In 2024, Louisa celebrated Pride Month by going Instagram official with her girlfriend Anna Blundell. The actress has since made a point to advocate for the LGBTQ community. She won the HRC Visibility Award from the Human Rights Campaign in 2025.

“I am so, so grateful and thankful to the HRC. I was surprised because I had only recently come out,” she later told People. “It’s such a brilliant opportunity to speak about visibility and what it means to this community and what it means to me.”
