First, The Devil Wears Prada and now this—the beloved 1997 romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding is officially getting a sequel, 28 years after the original starring Julia Roberts hit theaters.
According to multiple outlets, writer and director Celine Song—known for films like Materialists and Past Lives—is on board to write the script, though it’s unknown at this time who will direct the project.

Dermot Mulroney, who starred opposite Roberts in the original, told The New York Post in an article published on July 25 that “there is talk of a sequel,” though casting information—specifically if Roberts, Mulroney, or Cameron Diaz will return—hasn’t been made public yet.

The film is based around two best friends—Roberts’s Julianne and Mulroney’s Michael—who make a pact that, if they’re still single at 28 years old, they’ll get married. The movie follows what happens after Michael tells Julianne he is engaged to be married to Kimmy, played by Diaz. Julianne realizes that she is in love with Michael and attempts to stop the wedding—but has just four days to do it.
“Oh my gosh, the whole thing was a dream,” Mulroney said. “I knew even when I got the audition for it with Julia, like waiting in line with a whole bunch of other guys and I got the role.”

“I knew—and all of Hollywood knew—it was going to be an exceptional movie,” he added.
The movie was a hit, amassing $127 million at the domestic box office (which translates to $256 million in today’s dollars, according to The Hollywood Reporter).
Back in 2023, Roberts herself expressed interest in playing the food critic Julianne—also known as Jules—again on an episode of Watch What Happens Live. When asked which movie from her filmography she’d like to see get a sequel someday, the actress said, “I think, maybe, My Best Friend’s Wedding. Because there’s so many people in it, and to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going.”
