It’s Time to Bring Back the Moody ’90s Manicure

If you asked me to define my ’90s childhood with one beauty product, I know exactly what I’d choose: a shimmery, navy blue Wet n Wild nail polish. If you were an ’80s or ’90s kid, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The bottle with the long white handle and “Wet n Wild” written in a curvy font across the top. This nail polish, which probably cost about $2 at the time, was one of my most precious possessions, and my nails and toes were basically always navy blue from then on.

Though the ’90s have been “back” for years, one element that hasn’t made a complete revival is the moody manicure: Those vampy blackish-red or midnight-navy tones so popular during the decade. Instead, it feels like it’s all clean, bare “soap nails” all the time; yes, minimal manis were definitely a go-to during the ’90s, but the dark nail really feels like the nail of the decade. The joy of the era was the mishmash of so many trends and styles—chic, minimal fashion, grunge, you name it—with one manicure style that seamlessly fit in with whatever you were wearing. And it’s time to bring that moody, grungy-yet-glamorous nail back into your rotation all year long, not just come fall.

    Behind the Trend

“The ’90s were such a vibe—supermodel nails, grunge beauty, and minimalist glam all in one era,” says editorial and runway manicurist Jin Soon Choi. “I loved the range from sheer, clean manicures with a hint of pink gloss to edgy, moody vamp shades that felt rebellious and cool. French manicures were everywhere, too, but with a twist: crisp, squared-off tips that gave them attitude. And, of course, deep reds and blacks were the ultimate It-girl shades.”

The supreme ’90s nail color wasn’t my blue Wet n Wild (may she rest in peace), but rather Chanel’s Vamp, which was released in 1994 and became a runaway smash, gracing the fingers of all that era’s top trendsetters. Choi describes it as a “deep, almost-black burgundy—it was bold, sexy, and sophisticated and had just enough grunge.” Vamp elevated the dark nail color to a new level. “It became a true cult classic because it pushed boundaries—suddenly, dark nails weren’t just for rock stars, they were high fashion.”

If your style leans more toward Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy or office siren than coquette or guava girl, the ’90s moody mani is for you. (Bessette-Kennedy didn’t often wear nail polish, but she did occasionally sport a dark pedicure.) Shades of rich burgundy, smoky navy, and almost-black are a perfect nod to the ’90s. “They add edge to a tailored look and exude quiet confidence,” explains Choi. “They’re chic, timeless, and add depth to that clean, minimal aesthetic.” While straight-up black nail polish can feel a little “Lauren Conrad sipping drinks at Les Deux on The Hills,” ultra-dark blue and burgundy feel both nostalgic and modern at the same time.

    How to Get the Look

If you’re bored with pastels, nudes, and milky pinks, there’s no reason you shouldn’t swap those shades for an unexpected oxblood or midnight blue. “Dark nails absolutely work all year,” says Choi. “The key is keeping the shape clean—short to medium, round or soft square—so they look intentional, not heavy.” She likes contrasting them with dewy skin, fresh makeup, and light, airy clothes. “On toes, dark polish is always in. A deep burgundy or navy pedi looks luxurious and goes with everything from sandals to sneakers.” (Especially your fave flip-flops!)

Shades-wise, you’ve got options. Choi loves her brand JINsoon’s Risque, which she calls “the perfect black-cherry red with instant drama,” while Abyss is a dark, glossy navy. Chanel still sells Vamp, now under the name Rouge Noir, and Essie’s deep navy Caviar Bar simply couldn’t be chicer for nails and toes.

A precise, pro-level application technique is key with darker colors. Choi says that “prep is everything” here and recommends kicking off your mani by shaping the nails and pushing back cuticles. Apply a base coat like JINsoon’s Power Coat for a smooth canvas, and then apply two thin coats of color. To clean up the edges, Choi uses a detail brush dipped in remover for a pitch-perfect, ultra-moody dark mani that defies trends and seasons.
