It’s no secret that your favorite pair of jeans may have to retire during your pregnancy, but it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. Whether you’re a straight-leg, cropped, skinny, or boyfriend fan, the best maternity jeans are available in practically every style. But what should you look for aside from the cut? “The right pair of maternity jeans balances comfort and fashion, offering flexible fabric that adapts to your changing body while keeping a flattering shape,” says stylist and wardrobe consultant Tara West.

To help you in your search for the best maternity jeans, we’ve conducted hours of research, evaluating each on its fit, fabric, and sizing so you can purchase a pair (or two) with confidence. We also spoke with experts, including Catherine Bibeau, a stylist and creative fashion designer, and Maggie McGowan, the former Vice President of Design at Hatch. After considering dozens of jeans, we landed on these top-rated picks.

Material: Indigo and Light Wash: 92% cotton, 8% elastomultiester; True White: 60% cotton, 37% Tencel™ lyocell, 3% elastane | Colors: 4 | Size Range: 24-34 | Care: Machine wash cold and tumble dry low

No best maternity jeans lineup would be complete without an option from Hatch. The label’s Crop Maternity Jean is the ultimate add-to-cart pick for any expecting mom. They’re a great foundation for any maternity outfit, whether it’s an elevated sneaker and white T-shirt moment or a polished night out with a going-out top, statement earrings, and a block heel. The fitted hip and thigh, along with the kick crop, make them comfortable on all different and beautiful body shapes. Plus, with four different wash offerings, you’re ready to go anywhere.

Love your Levi’s? Look no further than one of the brand’s bestselling maternity styles during your pregnancy—the Gold Label skinny. With over 6,300 five-star ratings on Amazon, these super-stretchy jeans come in four washes and retain their shape, wear after wear. Plus, they feature a smooth and comfy knit over-the-bump panel that grows with you throughout each trimester and beyond.

Materials: Cotton, recycled polyester, recycled cotton, spandex | Colors: 5 | Size Range: 0-20 | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

Pregnant or not, inseam options are incredibly important when it comes to jeans-shopping: You want yours to fall exactly where you want them, whether that’s above your ankle or comfortably over your shoes. Old Navy’s maternity skinny jeans come in three inseams—short, regular, or long—to ensure a perfect fit. We also love that there are five wash options, so you can stock up on a few pairs if you end up loving them (which we really think you will).

    Material: 98% cotton, 2% elastane | Colors: 3 | Size Range: 24-34 | Care: Machine wash cold

These straight-leg jeans are the type of staple that you’ll wear on repeat throughout your pregnancy. The clean, cropped cut hits at the ankle to showcase your footwear of choice, from heels to sneakers and flats. With medium stretch throughout, elastic panels at the waist, and a button closure and zip fly, they’re as comfortable as they are polished, whether you style them with an oversized tee or a blazer and blouse.

Materials: Cotton, polyester, spandex | Colors: 1 | Size Range: 25-32 | Care: Turn inside out, machine wash cold with like colors, no bleach, hang dry, low iron if needed

The best maternity jeans don’t look like maternity jeans, and that’s what you’re getting with these pants from PinkBlush. Paired with an oversized sweater or button-down and your favorite pair of ankle boots, you’ll feel put together and effortlessly stylish. The stretchy, over-the-bump panel also grows with you and prioritizes you and your baby’s comfort.

Material: 59% lyocell, 23% cotton, 16% polyester, 2% elastane | Colors: 1 | Size Range: XS-XL | Care: Machine wash cold, tumble dry low

Sometimes, you want the comfort of a jogger with the look of jeans. These faux denim maternity joggers solve that dilemma. The under-the-bump elasticated waist makes them comfy and stretchy, while the denim effect elevates them one notch above your basic joggers. They’re still casual, yet they wouldn’t look out of place on a brunch date.

Material: 78% cotton, 20% polyester, 2% spandex | Colors: 1 | Size Range: XS, S, Medium (short, regular, long) | Care: Machine wash

This pair of maternity jeggings is one of the brand’s staple maternity styles, thanks to its versatility, which remains consistent throughout the seasons. They come in three different inseams so you can find your perfect fit and have ripped detailing for a rugged finish with a soft over-the-bump panel. These are a good option for those who don’t want the rigidity of denim but still like the look.

    Materials: 70% cotton, 28% polyester, 2% elastane | Colors: 1 | Size Range: S-XXL | Care: Machine wash

If you’re more of a flared-jean girl, consider this option from GLAMIX. With hundreds of five-star ratings, you can trust this pair to hug your changing belly comfortably without the dreaded roll down. We also love the lighter wash and soft feel of the denim that is sure to earn them a trusted spot in your maternity wardrobe.

    Credit: Yours

Materials: Cotton, elastane | Colors: 2 | Size Range: 12-28 | Care: Wash at 40 degrees C, iron low

Available in sizes 12 through 28, these skinny jeans offer a perfect balance of style and comfort. The denim material itself has lots of stretch, as does the over-the-bump panel. There are a couple of colorways to choose from, both of which are super easy to style with a pair of white sneakers or dressed up with some pretty flats.

Materials: Cotton, polyester, rayon, spandex, nylon | Colors: 4 | Size Range: XS-XL | Care: Machine wash cold, gentle cycle with like colors, tumble dry low, cool iron if needed

In pregnancy, comfort becomes even more necessary than usual. That’s where a pair of jeggings can really hit the spot, offering that put-together jeans look with the stretch of your favorite leggings. Available in sleek black and three blue washes, these skinnies feature an over-the-bump panel that you can fold over if you prefer it that way.

    Material: 99% cotton, 1% spandex | Colors: 5 | Size Range: 23-34 | Care: Machine wash

Joe’s maternity jeans are constantly selling out, and we’re currently coveting this white straight-leg fit for the warmer months. The clean look and lightweight feel are comfy in the heat and perfect with slide sandals, sneakers, and heels. Even better, the stretch panels go a little more unnoticed if they peek out from beneath your top (a common later-in-pregnancy woe).

What to Look for in Maternity Jeans

    • Supportive Fit: The best maternity jeans will have features that support and provide flexibility for bump growth. The fit must be designed with the pregnant body in mind, including how the hips and belly change and the effect said changes have on fabric pulling and bunching. Ideally, you’ll want to look for a “snug yet comfortable fit, allowing you to move freely while looking cool and chic in a modern denim cut,” says West.
    • Soft, Stretchy Fabric: According to West, the fabric of the best maternity jeans should be flexible enough to move with you as your body evolves throughout your pregnancy, while still looking stylish and not sagging or tugging in the wrong places. It’s best to opt for blends that combine elastane or spandex, as these fabrics offer more stretch and recovery than 100% cotton jeans.
    • Over-Belly vs. Panel: The best maternity jeans have either a full panel that covers your entire bump or stretchy side inset panels to provide more room at the waist. “Over-the-bump jeans are perfect for late in pregnancy when the bump is bigger, while side panel jeans are slightly more discreet,” says Bibeau. The one you choose is ultimately a matter of personal preference, as every pregnancy is different. “Over-the-bump jeans are perfect for late in pregnancy when the bump is bigger, while side panel jeans are slightly more discreet,” she adds.

    FAQ

    • While fit can fluctuate between brands, McGowan says most maternity denim labels offer sizing based on your current pregnancy measurements, so however you grow during gestation, you can purchase the right size, whether you opt for a below- or over-the-bump silhouette.

    • There’s no official “right” time to buy maternity jeans—it’s all about preference. The best maternity jeans are designed to be worn at all stages of pregnancy, including postpartum. Still, most women start shopping for maternity clothing once they are no longer able to wear their regular clothes comfortably and need more room and support.

    • The biggest difference is that they’re made to accommodate your growing belly. Below-the-bump maternity jeans feature elastic panels at the front waist and a lower front rise to accommodate all stages of pregnancy, with a slightly higher back rise for a secure and mobile feel. Over-the-bump maternity jeans feature a larger stretch panel, typically without a button and fly, resembling leggings. Keep in mind, too, that you can wear your maternity jeans even after you have your baby.
