Per Copenhagen Fashion Week, We’ll Be Wearing Our Flip Flops Into Fall

When you think fashion week, I’m sure your mind automatically travels to Paris or New York. That’s fair enough (those are massive ones!), but there are other places and corresponding weeks to pay attention to. Especially if we’re talking street style.

Last week, our Instagram feeds were full of content from the cobblestoned roads of Denmark, where Copenhagen Fashion Week was in full swing (fuld gang in Danish). As designers and brands like Anne Sofie Madsen, Cecilie Bahnsen, and Filippa K showed off their wares on the runway, the Scandi-chic fashion girls were out in full force, trendsetting on the fairytale-laden streets while bikes with similarly stylish riders whizzed past.

Though the designers, models, and more casual attendees offered us plenty to consider when it comes to fall outfitting, there was one thing that stuck out in looks across the board. Actually, there were ten things that stuck out: little toes, on full display because—despite the remainder of their outfits leaning cold weather—*everyone* was wearing flip flops.

Goddag, sandal lovers! It’s not time to pack your summer shoes up yet.

The Trend

While it’s no secret that flip flops have been trending everywhere (it’s that Y2K state of mind, plus the cross-generation influences of It Girls like Gigi Hadid and Jennifer Aniston), it’s been hard to picture them outside of our summertime dolphin girl wardrobe. Now, we know what we have to look forward to when the weather gets a little less balmy.

Though they have access to the same silhouette and leather or rubber materials that we’re rocking, the Copenhagen Fashion Week folk were all pairing their flip flops with baggy pants. “Flowy” was really the name of the game, with layered laces, knits, and linens topping the fashionistas’ choice wide-legged jeans or sweats. Some even chose to cozy up further with jackets of the leather and simple blazer varieties.

Seriously—there was *so much* coverage going on. Besides those toes! One diva was even smart enough to wear her flops with free-toe socks, which doubled as leg warmers.

How to Wear Flip Flops Into Fall

The Scandinavians know a thing or two about dressing for the weather, so I can assure you you’ll still be temperate with these looks. I guess the biggest problem will be keeping up your pedicure schedule a little while longer?

Unsurprisingly, stylist extraordinaire Gabriella Karefa-Johnson came to Copenhagen well versed in the local trends. The American fashionista styled her red rubber flip flops with baggy jeans, a white tunic from Free People, and unbuttoned button-up cardigan.

Still, the accessories sold the look. Besides the flops, she rocked chunky earrings, oversized sunglasses, the perfect necklace stack, black and white patterned Prada bag, a Rhode Lip Case in this summer’s premiere Lemontini shade (she styled the campaign!), and an espresso.

Among the endless pairs of baggy jeans and other oversized trousers present throughout the week, a not-so-secret third styling option existed: the maxi skirt or dress. But why stop there? This fashionista wore her long green sequin Baum und Pferdgarten dress *over* her cozy clothes. With light blue rubber flip flops, of course. You can’t forget the flip flops.

Sweather Weather

My Norwegian great grandmother would be so proud of this look, and I wouldn’t have to look much farther than her hand-me-downs to create it. After finding your favorite jeans and black flip flops, pull out a nordic or Fair Isle-patterned sweater, grab your favorite kerchief for a headscarf, throw on some chunky bangles, and hit the town.

Clòimh founder Hollie Mercedes Peters really did her flip flop and baggy pants thing all week long (she’s the one posing with the bike above), but I’m especially fond of this pink outfit that she wore to the Skall Studio show. It looks like guava girl summer doesn’t have to end anytime soon, either.

There’s so much going on here, but it’s all going well, from the oversized sunglasses to the front-seam jeans to the red rubber flip flops peeking out once again. I also love how the delicate, bright-red top (expertly unbuttoned for a belly button peek) pairs with that heavy black jacket.

Most importantly, though: Have you heard of scarf belting? It’s when you accessorize by tying a scarf around your waist. We’ve been all about silk, but this white lace overlay is hard to beat.
