Forget the 20-year fashion cycle, 2010s-era style is well and truly taking over fall 2025 trends. If Jenna Ortega’s chevron dress doesn’t convince you, ask the queen of ballet flats herself.
Jennifer Lawrence has been at the forefront of flat footwear trends ever since stepping out in those impractical, glove-like leather slippers by The Row back in 2022. Aside from her penchant for similarly slim sneakers, she’s always the first among celebs to embrace fresh takes on classic flats, from the mesh version that dominated 2024 to the new-and-improved jellies that scratch an itch for ’90s nostalgia.
With all that said, it would be fair to credit Lawrence for making ballet flats cool in a way they never really had been, despite the mass appeal of preppier takes in the late-aughts; be it the ubiquitous Tory Burch logo flat or cap-toed Chanel dupe. So color me surprised when Lawrence stepped out in a pair of simple black ballet flats that easily fit into that very category, down to their rounded toes and dainty bow details.

Of course, she still managed to make the flats feel as nonchalant as sneakers with a relaxed take on tailoring, pairing the suede ballet flats with a black midi skirt and open single-breasted blazer. The ultra-lady-like pairing of classic ballet flats and a navy Dior logo bag was perfectly offset by her untucked white T-shirt, breezy hairstyle, and not one, but three ankle bracelets.

Yes, you read that right—and saw it with your own eyes: Jennifer Lawrence elevated the most basic ballet flats by doubling down on millennial kitsch, opting for a stiff gold bangle on one foot and two mismatched anklets on the other. Lawrence finished everything off with a chunky charm necklace and a pair of black Heaven Mayhem sunglasses.
So yeah, millennial-core is taking over—and no one is going to do it better than actual millennials…bar maybe Jenna Ortega.
