Fall and winter are brimming with an abundance of snug spoiling, but few pieces are quite as indulgent as an extremely soft sweater. The time and temperature has come to burrow ourselves into our cold weather must-haves, and the best knitwear brands are here to keep us warm, and stylish. Of course, sweaters are a year-round wardrobe staple to invest in (think of lightweight Mariner stripes or loosely woven jumpers), but fall and winter’s crisp chill brings forth the most luxuriously spun styles, from cashmere to mohair blends, and crewneck to turtleneck silhouettes.

We’re talking about super-soft and colorful pieces from the knitwear savants &Daughter and Guest in Residence. Turtlenecks, both fitted and oversized, command a closer look at Extreme Cashmere and Arch4. There are minimalist finds from Almada Label and Linnea Lund, and maximalist statement styles from Zankov and Alanui. You have the contemporary brands, like Allude and Lisa Yang (who we can totally see the Olsen twins sporting), and new favorites from brands that make more than just sweaters, like Róhe and Toteme.

Whenever or however you like to bundle up, scroll on for Vogue’s edit of the best knitwear brands, from luxury labels to a crop of newbies on the scene.

&Daughter is a responsibly sourced and spun knitwear brand crafted in the British Isles and Ireland, and the level of care that goes into each piece is what sets it apart from the rest. With a belief in the beauty and strength of a local and specialist supply chain, you’ll find supersoft handmade lambswool, ribbed trims, argyle prints, and more.

This larger-than-life retailer, with its preppy incantations and timeless appeal, deals in more than just knits. But, when fall and winter roll around, you can spot multiple J.Crew sweaters in the Vogue offices—often the same style; they’re comfortable, and for the quality (these pieces last!), the price per wear can’t be beat.

Founded in 2014 by creative director Lisa Yang, the Stockholm-based brand sets out with the premise of designing collections to be worn for years to come. Each and every piece is made from cashmere—from ultra-fine to heavyweight and brushed—and spans men, women, and the home.

When Gigi Hadid first announced her new knitwear brand, we knew it was going to be a good one. To Hadid, a sweater is more than an item to toss on—it’s something to pass on, when made properly and cared for. Within each collection, find colorful stripes, Fair Isle, shrunken crewnecks, cable-knit shirting, and more.

For the classics, look no further than Arch4. Established in 2017, the London-based label focuses on high-quality, understated cashmere sourced from Mongolia. Not only is each sweater baby-soft to the touch, they’re also certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard.

Founded by Vogue veterans Meredith Melling and Valerie Macaulay and Rag & Bone’s former head of business development, Molly Howard, La Ligne focuses on timeless pieces, all unified by the stripe. Some garments are more literal than others, from classic Breton striped sweaters to playful color-block pullovers and knitted polo shirts.

Andrea Karg, a lawyer searching for feminine yet creative knits, founded Allude in 1993. As creative director, she focuses on items that are “urbane, contemporary and intelligent.” Here, you’ll find some of Vogue’s favorite styles, from polo cardigans to cozy turtlenecks.

By now, we’ve all come to know and adore Khaite. The label is beloved for its robust offering of polished foundation pieces with ease, all distinguished by premium materials and subtle yet striking details.

Soft Goat delivers on both conscious and affordable investment pieces with a plush feel. Their core is knitwear and satisfying cashmere, designed to last, and designed for timelessness. Each knit, whether an oversized turtleneck, or brushed tee, is designed in Stockholm from yarn that is Oeko-Tex certified.

Bring a touch of luxury into your everyday wardrobe with Extreme Cashmere. This knitwear brand doesn’t follow the traditional (often wasteful) fashion cycle, and instead adds to an ongoing collection pieces that work for any season or aesthetic. Fleeting trends, be gone! Indulge in staples in an array of hues, from red, to green, cream and black.

Helmed by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, The Row is synonymous with luxuriously spun knitwear. Bestsellers range from simple crewnecks and turtlenecks to subtle albeit impeccably detailed cardigans, sweater dresses, and intricate pullovers. Following the Olsens’s personal taste, a common theme is oversized fits—so perfect for layering.

Although Toteme is known for more than just sweaters (think of their scarf-neck coat, shearling jackets, and T-lock clutches), a knitwear list just wouldn’t be the same without mention. The label’s knitwear is constantly selling out thanks to effortless Swedish sensibilities, emphasis on materiality and shape. You’ll find the cult-favorite signature striped turtleneck, alpaca scarf sweaters, and everyday, pared-back knits.

Made in Italy, Casasola uses sustainably sourced and fully biodegradable materials to produce thoughtful, functional, and luxe knitwear everyone can enjoy. Founder Barbara Casasola likes to focus on the essentials. Think of neutral-colored turtlenecks, crew, and V-necks that can be worn daily.

While plenty cozy, The Elder Statesman’s knitwear assortment is a far cry from neutral. Instead, the Los Angeles-based luxury label, founded in 2007 by Greg Chait, offers a more playful California-surf aesthetic with signatures like ultra-saturated tones and quirky motifs, all in sumptuous cashmere.

Linnea Lund is one of our favorite places to find holiday gifts for loved ones—their offerings span women, men, babies, and kids. Each piece, from knits to gloves and hats, are made the old-fashioned way on manual knitting machines, with a foot pedal. We’re particularly fond of the Fair Isle sweaters crafted in unique color combinations, like baby blue and camel, or or pale grey and butter yellow.

Enter Loulou de Saison, helmed by Chloé Harrouche. The contemporary brand takes inspiration from city living and offers chic sophistication with its selection of perfectly carefree essentials—trousers, suiting, elevated coats, and of course, a selection of knitwear.

The sibling-founded brand by Nicolò and Carlotta Oddi has amassed a cult following thanks to their textural fabrics, ornate prints, and intricate handicraft. Since launch, they have expanded its offerings to include knitted skirts, bralettes, shorts, and pullovers. Naturally, though, we can’t help but champion the piece that started it all—sweaters.

Founded in 2020, Henry Zankov arrived on the scene to shift our idea of knitwear as we knew it. The label is known for its graphic sweaters in adventurous color combinations and easy-to-wear shapes that he has been building upon each season.

In each drop, you’ll notice the classics infused with Scandi minimalism. Influencers Alexa Dagmar and Linda Juhola never compromise on quality, and offer a refreshingly modern take on a seasonless wardrobe. Indulge in fuzzy brushed cashmere, relaxed fits, and dropped shoulders in a variety of soothing neutral hues.

Launched in 2021 by Marieke Meulendijks and Maickel Weyers, look to Róhe for a subdued cool and elevated minimalism, with a twist. Traditional knitwear gets an Amsterdam upgrade with wrap-neck details, slouchy, lived-in silhouettes, and on-trend colors.
