When it comes to beauty, oftentimes, less is more, and a natural approach may even get you closer to your goals than seemingly “fix-all,” chemical-powered products. Cue: rosemary hair oil, a holistic approach to long, luscious locks. Rather than loading your scalp and strands with an overabundance of products with mystery ingredients, this simple herb oil is effective, budget-friendly, and safe for all hair types. It really is that good.

The best rosemary oil for hair growth “helps scalp blood flow, bringing more oxygen and nutrients to follicles,” says Christine Thompson, cofounder and chief creative officer at Spoke & Weal, a full-service hair salon. This impact creates the optimal environment for healthy, growing hair. “Studies show rosemary oil performed as well as 2 percent minoxidil after six months for androgenetic alopecia,” she noted. Case in point, the natural solution is just as powerful, if not more effective, than other growth-centric products on the market.

Ready to give rosemary hair oil a try for yourself? Ahead, we’ve broken down the best rosemary hair oils for growth, whether you’re looking for an organic solution or would rather try out a water formula, and we tapped industry-leading experts to answer your every question.

Why We Love It: This rosemary hair oil is fragrance-free and non-sensitizing, letting the formula get to work without the risk of irritants. Plus, the power of rosemary is supported by other hair-loving ingredients like tea tree oil, bisabolol, and castor oil for an extra boost.

Who It’s For: This option is perfect for someone looking for a mess-free and powerful product, especially if you’d rather skip the hassle of mixing with a carrier oil. Leave it in for 10-15 minutes (or even overnight) before rinsing it out and shampooing.

Worth Noting: If you’re looking for a pure oil, this blend may not be for you.

Worth Noting: You may want to mix this one with a carrier oil, like jojoba or castor oil.

Key Ingredients: Water, glycerin, rosemary, peppermint oil | Size: 8 oz

Why We Love It: This rosemary oil lets the herb be the leading active in a clean, cruelty-free elixir. Keep it simple, keep it powerful. Not only is it formulated without any harmful ingredients, but it also comes in a chic, weighted glass bottle that acts as a luxurious addition to any #shelfie.

Who It’s For: This is the solution for anyone looking for an elevated bottle with a powerful, no-frills formula.

Why We Love It: If you’re looking for a product that soothes the scalp and stimulates the hair follicles for regrowth, this rosemary oil by JVN is a winner. It’s a complex, nutrient-rich formula, supported by other actives like turmeric oil, hemisqualane, and neem seed extract.

Who It’s For: This is for someone who wants an action-oriented hair oil.

Worth Noting: It’s not a completely clean formula.

Why We Love It: This serum acts against hair shredding, supports hair regrowth, and helps balance the scalp–all through the power of clean, cruelty-free ingredients. As women, our systems can be especially sensitive to chemicals and additives, so a brand like The Nue Co. is one that you can trust with your health and hair growth. Plus, its easy applicator is a win for a mess-free mask.

Who It’s For: For the health-conscious, this is a clean product that will still achieve your goals.

Worth Noting: If you’re looking for pure rosemary, it’s important to note this one also contains Redensyl and probiotics.

Why We Love It: Men like to keep it simple, so this rosemary hair oil by Botanic Hearth should be their go-to. It’s already mixed with both jojoba and castor oil as carrier oils, and the bottle has an easy, squeeze applicator and even comes with a comb-like top to aid in smoothing through the hair.

Who It’s For: This is ideal for someone who wants a straight-to-the-point approach.

Worth Noting: To focus on scalp application, you’ll want to skip the small, comb top.

Key Ingredients: Rosemary oil, biotin, castor oil, jojoba oil | Size: 6.7 oz

    What to Keep in Mind

    • Hair Type: Rosemary hair oil works on all hair types; however, you’ll want to consider your strands and scalp sensitivity before buying a new formula. You may want to test different carrier oils or formats, ranging from oils to water or infused shampoo, to find what works best for you.
    • Application: Most oils are best applied before the shower and massaged into the scalp. For those who are tolerant, experts say it’s okay to leave on overnight to maximize scalp absorption. Consider whether you prefer a dropper, syringe, or squeeze bottle when deciding which brand to buy.
    • Scalp Sensitivity: Rosemary hair oil shouldn’t irritate your scalp, but if you have sensitive skin, Thompson suggests that it’s wise to do a patch test behind your ear. You should use a carrier oil (like jojoba or grapeseed) to dilute the potency and minimize the chance of irritation.

    Your Questions, Answered

How does rosemary oil help hair grow?

“Rosemary oil (Rosmarinus officinalis) contains bioactive compounds that exhibit anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory, and antioxidant effects, all essential for optimal hair growth. These properties may reduce perifollicular inflammation, increase scalp microcirculation, and modulate DHT activity, creating a more favorable environment for growth cycle extension,” says Anetta Reszko, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon in New York City. A solid foundation (a healthy scalp) allows for hair growth to happen.

How long does it take for rosemary oil to work?

It depends. Most experts agree that it can take at least three months to see results. Sometimes, it can take up to six. Like many of our favorite beauty products, results aren’t guaranteed. If you’re concerned with hair loss, we recommend seeing a trichologist or dermatologist who could prescribe potential remedies.

What are the disadvantages of rosemary oil?

Given the fact that rosemary is a herb, it’s generally safe to use. Although you’ll want to ensure you’re being mindful as you rinse out the oil. “I recommend shampooing twice (with a color-safe shampoo if your hair is colored) to avoid buildup and make sure styling goes well,” says Thompson. Plus, be careful of your environment while you’re letting the oil soak into your scalp. “If you are exposed to a lot of sun with rosemary oil in your hair, more damage can happen (regular sun exposure causes UV damage to hair even without concentrates in hair). It’s always best to protect your hair and color while in the sun for prolonged periods,” says Thompson.

Can I use rosemary oil in my hair daily?

Anna Astarte, celebrity trichologist, shares that it isn’t necessary to use rosemary hair oil daily–in fact, that could lead to irritation. You’ll maximize benefits by using it two or three times per week. If you do want to integrate rosemary into your daily routine, Thompson suggests a shampoo with rosemary infused within the product. Her Spoke & Weal-approved list includes Aveda Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo, Nécessaire The Shampoo, and Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scaling Shampoo.

How long should I leave rosemary oil in my hair?

The length that you leave rosemary oil in your hair depends on your scalp sensitivity, but Astarte suggests that 30 minutes to two hours is ideal. “Overnight is okay in a diluted blend, but more doesn’t always mean better,” she notes.

What is the best way to use rosemary oil on my hair?

Using rosemary hair oil is simple, but should still be done in mindful steps. “Think less is more. Dilute a few drops in a carrier oil (like jojoba or grapeseed), apply to the scalp, massage for 5–10 minutes, and leave on for about an hour before washing. Do this two to three times a week,” Astarte says, adding that “applying it to your ends won’t boost growth, roots are where the story begins.” Keep the product on the top of your scalp so you don’t waste any of the good stuff.
