The great and noble poets of Def Leppard were onto something when they penned “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” Close, but they just didn’t anticipate that in 2026, we’d rather be doused in Diet Coke than straight sugar. Of course, aspartame doesn’t feel great on the skin, and it has a sticky dry-down. Instead, we’ll need to settle for the next best thing: Diet Coke fragrance.

Soda has experienced a bit of a renaissance lately, becoming more of a wistful cool girl accessory than movie theater staple. So we’ve had options. Soda fountain-inspired lip glosses, body scrubs, and even eyeshadow palettes. They’re a staple in mirror selfies. Nail color inspo. Megan Stalter walked the red carpet in a cardboard Diet Coke corset. Addison Rae wrote a chart-topper about diet cola. At this point, it’s more of a signifier of cool than a kid’s pizza party beverage.

It was only a matter of time before smelling like one became the next trend. After all, the smell has always been delicious. A kind of warm, caramel-y sweetness with a bright, fizzy finish. Notes that New York City-based perfumer Darryl Do says aren’t new to the fragrance world, like “lemon, lime, vanilla, and nutmeg.” Fragrance brands have been making cola-inspired scents for years, he says. It’s the craving for them that’s seeing an uptick.

According to Spate Popularity Index, searches across Google, TikTok, and Instagram for Diet Coke have increased 36.7% year over year. The brand is in good company, appearing next to searches for other legacy comfort brands like Spam, Stouffers, and Clinique.

The data suggests that in 2026, we’re finding solace in nostalgia. Flavors, scents, and experiences that we may associate with the “good old days”—home cooked meals, holidays, and time spent with friends. We’re posting throwback photos of ourselves in 2016 and resurrecting Y2K style.

“Diet Coke isn’t just a drink for a lot of people,” says Jeniece Trizzino, vice president of innovation and product for Scentbird. “It is tied to specific memories: a can on a desk at work, a road trip, a college dorm fridge, a parent’s go-to order. Scent is one of the fastest routes to memory, so bottling that association turns an everyday habit into something emotional and personal.”

“For many of us, the taste of a soda can take us back to a very specific time in our lives,” agrees Fulton & Roark co-founder Kevin Keller. “Scent is even better at that kind of time travel than taste is.”

But comfort and nostalgia aren’t the only motivators behind this trend. “There’s humor and self-awareness to it,” says Trizzino. The “I love Diet Coke so much, I’d bathe in it” hyperbole. “People love fragrances that feel like an inside joke or a personality flex rather than something purely elegant,” she says. Smelling like a refined French 75 cocktail is all fine and good. Smelling like Diet Coke says something playful about who you are and taps into the cult-like devotion we’re seeing all over social media. If a non-negotiable 3pm Diet Coke is part of your lifestyle, a Diet Coke fragrance is a winky nod to that. It only helps that the brand offers major cool points right now.

There has also always been a place for vice in fragrance (sorry to point out that classic diet cola and cigarettes, while very Gabbriette right now, are not actually good for you). “Whether we’re talking about tobacco notes, boozy notes, or indulgent gourmands, the smell of our vices really speaks to some people,” says Keller. “In an era where we’re concerned about sugar, and even more so about artificial sweeteners, a diet cola scent feels like a nod to indulging a vice without any of the actual consequences.”
