A longtime favorite in trail mixes and baseball teams, sunflower seeds are an easy addition to basically anything. And while they are often used as a topping for added texture, these seeds also pack a notable amount of nutrients into a small serving. They are a fantastic source of plant-based protein, fiber, unsaturated fats, vitamin E, magnesium, and the hard-to-get selenium, making them a nutritious option to keep in your everyday snack rotation.

Archana Batra, dietitian and certified diabetes educator, explains: “The combination of nutrients found in sunflower seeds can support several aspects of overall health, from heart health and immune function to the body’s antioxidant defenses.”

Below, experts break down everything you need to know about sunflower seed benefits and how to make them a part of your daily diet to get the most out of them.

    Nutritional value of sunflower seeds

A 30 gram serving of sunflower seeds (about a palm’s worth) contains:

    • 5 grams of protein
    • Approximately 3 grams of fiber
    • Vitamin E
    • Magnesium
    • Unsaturated fats

7 sunflower seed benefits for health

    Supports heart health

The unsaturated fats in sunflower seeds can support heart health when replacing with foods that are higher in saturated fat (think bacon on top of salads). They may help maintain healthy cholesterol levels, making them a useful addition to a balanced diet.

    Provides antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits

Sunflower seeds contain vitamin E, magnesium, unsaturated fatty acids and other antioxidant compounds that can help protect cells from oxidative stress. “Sunflower seeds make their impact very beautifully in an anti-inflammatory diet, too,” explains Batra. “The presence of unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium as well as the various compounds which act like antioxidants may very well guide in maintaining our cells safe from oxidative stress.”

    Supports immune function

Sunflower seeds contain zinc, a mineral that plays an important role in supporting normal immune function. Their combination of zinc, vitamin E, and selenium makes them a useful source of nutrients that help support the body’s natural defenses.

Helps protect cells from environmental stress

The antioxidants in sunflower seeds, particularly vitamin E and selenium, help neutralize free radicals that can contribute to cellular damage. Including antioxidant rich foods in the diet can therefore help support the body’s defenses against oxidative stress.

    Supports muscle and nerve function

Magnesium is involved in several essential processes in the body, including normal muscle and nerve function. Sunflower seeds can contribute to daily magnesium intake as part of a varied and balanced diet.

    Good source of energy

Magnesium also plays a role in energy metabolism, helping the body convert the food we eat into energy. While sunflower seeds are not an instant energy booster, their combination of healthy fats, protein, fiber, and magnesium makes them a nutrient dense addition to the diet.

Are raw or toasted sunflower seeds healthier?

Easy answer, according to Dr. Shilpa says, “I wouldn’t say that sunflower seeds need to be eaten exclusively raw to be healthy.” Both raw and lightly dry roasted seeds can be part of a balanced diet. What matters more is avoiding varieties that are heavily salted or prepared with unnecessary added oils or preservatives, as Bajaj also points out.
