Meet the Wellness Brands Riding the Anti-Optimization Wave

One glance at the wellness industry, and optimization is everywhere. Women are taking creatine and assessing their vaginal health. Men are fertility-maxxing and looksmaxxing with peptides. And both are tracking their stress levels, workouts and sleep, with Oura rings or Whoop bands. But as Vogue Business reported earlier this year, a growing cohort of consumers are now defecting from tracking and optimizing their wellbeing altogether. Brands within the anti-optimization space are thriving as a result.

While anti-optimization is yet to be officially defined, anecdotally, it describes a wellness philosophy that prioritizes experience and presence over pure vitality and efficiency. It’s “anything that helps consumers reconnect with the fundamentals, whether that’s their breath, presence, sleep, nature, or themselves,” Daniel Teweles, head of communications at UK-based wellness retailer Healf, says.

Products that support winding down, calm, and overall stress fall within this category. These include circadian lighting that supports natural sleep patterns; adaptogens, like ashwagandha and reishi, which reduce stress and cortisol; and calming amino acids, like L-theanine to support relaxed focus.

“Being ‘always-on’ and ‘always-connected’ has stopped being a flex,” says Alice Crossley, principal strategic foresight analyst at foresight consultancy The Future Laboratory. “Instead, people are looking for a stronger connection with themselves and their own intuition.”

While this consumer segment is still small, relative to the $6.8 trillion wellness industry it sits within, brands playing in this space are increasingly resonating. New York-based startup Pulse Mindfulness launched its anti-tracking wearable, the Pulse Ring, in May, which vibrates throughout the day as a reminder to break auto-pilot, following a $3 million seed raise. Barefoot shoe label Hart Workshop launched its ergonomic sneakers in February, and reported revenues of over £444,000 in early June. British design brand Tala expanded into wellness in October 2025 with its first circadian rhythm light, in collaboration with Thomas Heatherwick Studio. Meanwhile, FMCG brand Alice Mushrooms raised $8 million in Series A funding last September following the success of its functional chocolates.

Similarly, Australian wellness app Kic has garnered a community of over 2.8 million across 120 countries, resulting in 30% annual revenue growth in October 2025, per the company. Kic has been in the anti-optimization space for over a decade, but as co-founder Laura Henshaw tells Vogue Business, “the cultural moment we’re in right now is the most significant shift we’ve seen since we launched.”

The positive growth trajectories of these brands can offer a blueprint for those looking to carve out a wellness niche in an otherwise saturated space. But is anti-optimization simply a counter-cultural trend, or is it here to stay?
