A white button-down shirt is an essential part of a good capsule wardrobe. It has become such common staple, however, that I fear we’ve reached a bit of a button-down fatigue. At least, that’s what I’ve observed among fall fashion trends across the globe. Designers from Balenciaga to Ralph Lauren and Khaite have all been reimagining what the lady’s suit shirt could look like. Picture white blouses with billowing sleeves, bows around the neckline, and silky shirts that cascade down the leg—all great alternatives for a classic button-down shirt. We have officially entered the suit shirt 2.0 era.
I first spotted the trend at the Yves Saint Laurent Spring/Summer 2026 runway, where models walked down the runway in big bow-tie-accented blouses. More recently, at Copenhagen Fashion Week, designers like MKDT showcased drapey blouses and short-sleeved sheer button-downs layered over oversized T-shirts.
The timing couldn’t have been better. Season after season, New York’s leading designers have tried to capture the working woman’s wardrobe. But there’s only so much one can do with the same cut and look of a button-down shirt—even with all their various fits. Fall is fast approaching, and women are in need of corporate-ready blouses that are more visually invigorating than a classic work shirt. So, without further ado, see all of our favorite white button-down alternatives to wear to work, drinks, and events below.
