Shoe trends are always evolving. One moment we’re embracing chunky dad sneakers. The next, slim silhouettes and statement sneakers are all over the runway. It’s comforting to know that what was once loved will find its way back again. So as I pack away my ergonomic hiking shoes in place of low-profile kicks, I know that it’s an until later, and not a goodbye forever.
This past year, slim-fit sneakers have been trending right alongside other form-hugging shoes like sneakerinas and soft-leather oxfords. The rest of fashion may still be favoring all things ‘90s, but sneakers seem to be one category where trends are looking ahead. If the ’90s were all about thick lifestyle shoes—think basketball and hip-hop-influenced styles like the Air Force Ones or Air Jordans—today’s models are about hugging the foot. Even the Adidas Sambas are being outranked by their slimmer sister, the Tokyo shoe.
That’s not to say that sneakers have become less interesting, though. Animal prints, bright colors, unique laces, and floral accents have been splattered across the shoe. Shoe charms are a thing now, too, turning an everyday practical sneaker into a statement piece. And brands like Cecilie Bahnsen and Dries Van Noten have reinvented the sporty shoe into something more like a collectable via unique and beautiful ornamentation.
How to style statement sneakers for fall 2026
Feel free to get really expressive with your statement sneaker. Style them with high socks, rather than ankle socks, and slip into a midi skirt. If you’re wearing a colorful sneaker, we recommend keeping the rest of your look more neutral so as to not take attention away from the personality-filled shoe. While sporty-chic ensembles naturally pair well with sneakers, preppy styles like polo sweaters, blazers, and pleated skirts look equally as good with this type of shoe too.
