Is there any living movie star as utterly beloved as Julie Andrews? With her work in Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, and, decades later, The Princess Diaries series, Andrews established her status as one of filmdom’s most beguiling performers, long possessed of both a heavenly voice (tragically damaged during surgery in 1997) and deft comedic timing.
But it’s little wonder that she was such an ace performer; Andrews began singing and acting in childhood, making her Broadway debut as a teenager in Sandy Wilson’s The Boy Friend. Her career from then on would span theater, movies (both live-action and animated), teleplays, and variety specials, setting her opposite the likes of, yes, Rex Harrison, Dick Van Dyke, and Christopher Plummer, but also Paul Newman, Rock Hudson, Omar Sharif, Burt Reynolds, James Garner, and Jack Lemmon.
Now 91—Andrews was born in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on October 1, 1935—Andrews is also known as a respected children’s book author and the voice of Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton. In celebration of her tremendous body of work, however, we at Vogue have turned the clock back to the 1940s–1980s, seeking out some of the very best vintage pictures of Julie Andrews that we could find. Enjoy that selection below.
