Is a high protein breakfast always the answer?
While there is evidence that eating a protein-rich breakfast promotes satiety, keeps the brain focused, and has a positive impact on metabolic health, it isn’t the only way to feel good. It’s important to remember that wellbeing is a multidimensional concept, and that a myriad of factors go into staying well. Following a single, specific rule will never be a magical cure-all.
“Rather than saying that protein directly boosts concentration, I’d say that a breakfast with a sufficient amount of protein can help some people maintain better focus and more stable mental energy throughout the morning,” Parada notes. “Proteins provide us with amino acids, some of which are precursors to neurotransmitters involved in brain function. This doesn’t mean that eating more protein automatically increases our neurotransmitter levels or our ability to concentrate.”
In fact, this benefit is likely due to several factors acting together—related to satiety, metabolic and hormonal responses, and the availability of amino acids—and not solely to neurotransmitters.
“That’s why I wouldn’t say that eating more protein immediately equals better concentration; rather, our ability to concentrate depends more on other factors such as sleep quality, hydration, stress, physical activity, and ensuring that our energy needs are adequately met throughout the day,” concludes Parada.
High protein breakfast ideas
As anyone who has tried to follow the “30 grams of protein for breakfast rule” can attest, it’s actually pretty difficult to meet that goal—especially from eating eggs alone. After all, one egg provides just 6 grams of protein; to reach 30 grams, you’d have to gobble up four or five eggs in one sitting.
If you’re dead set on getting as much protein as possible first thing in the morning, it might be better instead to focus on combining different foods rather than obsessing over an exact number of grams—especially because it’s also important to eat a wide variety of foods throughout the day to meet all of your nutritional needs anyway. Below, a few ideas that help you do just that:
