17 Short Nail Art Ideas for August, From Aperol Orange to Chrome Accents

    • Short nails are no longer limited to plain styles; intricate designs are fully possible.
    • Nail pros now tailor patterns and scaling techniques to flatter smaller canvases.
    • August brings an array of nail looks, from nature motifs to vibrant textures and summer icons.

There’s a common misconception that nail art is reserved for those who prefer a bit of length, and that short nails lend themselves to simpler designs, such as a wash of color or a French tip. While you can’t go wrong with either, more and more nail artists are pulling out their fine line brushes and catering their art to those who prefer a shorter manicure.

“There’s a huge amount of requests from the short nail lovers for more art these days,” says Morgan Dixon, NOLA-based nail artist and owner of Lab & Lounge Salon. “Long nails are fun and bold, but you can also achieve the same results with short nails—you just have to know how to scale and use what you have, and 9 times out of 10 it works!”

Ahead, find 17 inspo-worthy manicure ideas that are as versatile as they are flattering for any length of claws.

    Monarch Migration

    madnails

Like looking at a butterfly under a magnifying glass, this set features details—the corner of a wing, the top of an antenna—against negative space to give the illusion of a butterfly flying by. The butterflies start their annual migration in mid-August, so why not send them off in style?

    Magnolia Season

    madnails

Mimicking the traditional shape of a French manicure, this design uses detailed white magnolias to wrap around the edge of the nail. When painting shorter nails, working from the ends will maximize your space.

    Martini Girl Summer

    iramshelton

Martinis were everyone’s drink of choice this summer, and this manicure, featuring a magnetic cat-eye and red accent gem, is both subtle and a chic nod to the cocktail, whether you prefer yours extra dirty or with a twist.

    Café au Lait

    iramshelton

A clean, classic French tip design can elevate your manicure, regardless of nail shape or length. This one adds a little bit of opacity on the nail bed, taking the blueberry milk trend to a classic French lait. Full stop.

    Blink and You’ll Miss It

    madnails

“When it comes to a French, the line just has to fit smaller, but it still comes out great,” says Dixon, who created this Barbie-approved set. Amidst a wash of bright pink, the tips of these nails are painted in an ever-so-slightly darker shade, creating a very subtle French.

    Mix and Match

    sansungnails

“I think bold finishes and textures are great,” Dixon says of this year’s nail trends. This set checks all the boxes, combining an aura nail, a chrome nail, foil detailing, and piercing-inspired appliqué into one cohesive story.

    Watercolor

    madnails

As for what’s trending, Dixon says she sees “a shift towards moodier colors and chrome finishes.”  Her jewel-toned watercolor set features gold foil accents and looks exactly like dipping a freshly washed paintbrush back into your palette. “There also may be more conceptual designs and illustrations that feel more seasonal,” she adds.

    Pierced

    sansungnails

While the brown and blue aura layers unlock some mid-2000s nostalgia, the studs on either side of the nail create the illusion that they’re pierced right through—using horizontal space can allow for more flexibility when working with a shorter nail length.

    Picnic Blanket

    madnails

The scalloped red edges of this set are offset by solid accent nails and filled in with flowers reminiscent of a late-summer picnic in the park.

    Variety Pack

    rachelsuenails

Why not try a little bit of everything? The fine-tipped detail of this set allows the artist to include all of nail art’s biggest trends, from flames to stars to a checkerboard, and everything in between.

    Brush Strokes

    iramshelton

If you’ve decided on a shorter length, but can’t nail down your preferred shape, Dixon recommends a square or even squoval for a more intricate design. “It just allows more room to play with for art,” she advises.

    Pamplemousse

    oliviaannicenailartist

Dixon recommends making some designs larger “to fit directly into the full nail,” as it can scale the design on a shorter manicure. Rather than accenting the manicure, the 3D grapefruit slices on this set take up the entire nail to pack a (fruit) punch.

    Airbrushed to Perfection

    gabrielladoesnails

The ever-popular aura nail trend, often created using an airbrush tool, works for any nail length, as its overlapping solids fill the space by working with the borders of each nail.

    Inverted French

    iramshelton

Flipping the classic French manicure on its head, this set makes the most out of its canvas while presenting a unique design by leaving some negative space along the half-moon of the cuticle.

    Chrome Crossover

    gabrielladoesnails

With chrome nails out in full force this summer, this manicure uses the finish as an accent to play with shape and borders in a way that pops. Some nails are lined with chrome on the cuticle edge, some on the outer edge, like a French manicure, and some are painted in a Z-shape that extends straight through the middle. The creative detailing in this set utilizes the length of its canvas, making it easily transferable to any nail length.

    Aperol Spritz

    @lauradidmynails

Fresh from the vine or straight from the Italian coastline, nothing says August like a spritz. Not unlike our butterfly design, this orange tree is transported to the nail as if we were zooming in on a photo and getting the perfect snapshot.

    Seafood Season

    labandlounge

Dixon’s salon, Lab and Lounge, is based in New Orleans, so it’s only natural that they’ve perfected the cutest crawfish nails. Nail art is incredibly detailed—even a long nail is a tiny canvas, so scaling this design onto a short nail is a feat in itself. The pink backdrop stands out against the orange detailing, composed of tiny brushstrokes.
