The skater skirt you wore 15 years ago will triumph in fall 2025.
August is drawing to a close, and that’s making us look even harder for the trends we’ll wear for our return to the school year. In fashion, you can tell a trend is the repetition of a pattern. That means if we see the same piece on several runway shows or worn by several different people in street style, we can say we’ve identified one.
Reviewing the latest Copenhagen street style—an inexhaustible source of inspiration—I noticed that my favorite teenage staple was repeated several times in inspirational looks like those of Jeanette Madsen, one of the founders of the brand ROTATE, among others. I’m referring to none other than the skater skirt, an ’80s icon that we revived in the 2010s. Now, 15 years later, it seems to be making a strong comeback among those most in the know about fashion.

With its seemingly childlike look and preppy charm, the skater skirt was a favorite of one of the era’s icons: Blair Waldorf herself, who wore it endlessly on Gossip Girl. Invented in the 1980s, this skirt takes its name from the shape of the models worn by figure skaters at the time. It is characterized by a fluid and light style, with a short cut, fitted at the waist and flared at the bottom, all to give skaters complete freedom of movement.

As the fashion influencers in Copenhagen show us, the skater skirt is back in our lives, but not in the same way it always was. Now we’re combining them with current pieces to give this garment a fresh and updated touch, such as thong sandals, a basic sweater, a preppy tie, a barn jacket, and kitten heels.
