While it’s not the most exciting piece in my closet, mastering how to style a button-down has become one of the most useful styling tricks I have up my sleeve. There’s a reason the style made it into my fall capsule wardrobe. The humble shirt has become a regular in my rotation, not just for work—but for grabbing drinks with friends, or running errands on a weekend simply because of the shirt’s versatility. As someone whose style leans relaxed, a button-up blouse can make denim cutoffs feel dressy, but that exact same shirt style tucked into trousers or chinos completely transforms the vibe.

One of the simplest tricks for making a button down shift feel fresh and fancy, is to shake up the way you do your securing. Where you might normally fasten from the bottom up, try instead only button the top few buttons. Pair your top with a high-waisted skirt or pair of trousers, and just the tiniest bit of skin will peek out from under your top—trés chic.

If effortless French-girl style is something you aspire to, a tucked in button up shirt is the easiest way to channel that Parisian energy.
