In the past, thinking of Hunter Boots might have brought to mind rain, puddles, and gloomy British weather. But forget the forecast for a moment: In fall 2025, the iconic rubber boots are becoming quite the fashion statement, to be worn on even the sunniest of days. Celebrities and style stars have been wearing them everywhere from summer music festivals to city streets.
Much like the barn jacket, another big trend from the past year, the Wellington model—or wellies—has long been a classic symbol of British style. And while it’s true that they were created to combat rain and mud, it’s also true that you don’t need to wait for bad weather to wear them anymore. For the unfamiliar, Hunter Boots was born in Scotland in 1856 at the behest of American entrepreneur Henry Lee Norris, who founded the North British Rubber Company to produce sturdy and durable rubber boots. The design is simple, and the functionality is top-notch: They keep feet dry, adapt to all kinds of terrain, and—especially today—elevate any outfit with a British twist.
Maybe that’s why the royals have long been fans, from Queen Elizabeth to Princess Diana to Kate Middleton (who still wears them at events). Princes William and Harry have been photographed with the iconic green boots on their feet too.
Today, fashion pros are going far beyond pairing their Hunter boots with skinny jeans and a beige trench coat. The new, more modern take on wellies sees them with midiskirts or minis, colorful, thick wool socks or sheer tights. A contrast between the shiny rubber and soft textures (chunky knit, tweed, velvet) is the key to creating a striking contemporary look, perfect for both gray days in the city or a weekend getaway.
As for the color palette? Army green and black remain timeless classics, but we’re also seeing variations like cherry red and mustard yellow. The latter are ideal for those who want to give their outfit a colorful twist without sacrificing practicality.
