What ingredients should you look for in a face mask?
The ingredients in your face mask make a huge difference in how effectively they’ll work.
“Collagen, when used topically, moisturizes skin, and when combined with other ingredients (like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, squalane, and ceramides), it can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles to give the appearance of more youthful skin,” says Howard Sobel, MD, a cosmetic dermatologic surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in NYC.
Other things to look out for: Peptides, which can plump and soften skin to make it look more bouncy and youthful. Niacinamide which helps address redness and inflammation for more even-toned skin. Vitamin C, vitamin E, and other antioxidants are also great for minimizing discoloration, dullness, and dark spots.
According to the dermatologists we spoke with, face masks do work, but it’s important to think of them as a temporary boost to your skin. “They hydrate, smooth, and brighten, so they are perfect before an event, a night out, or even just when you wake up looking tired,” says Hope Mitchell, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at Mitchell Dermatology in Ohio. Undereye patches, for example, also work, but you should limit your long-term expectations.
We tested face masks over a series of months, choosing ones with dermatologist-recommended ingredients like collagen, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, peptides, ceramides, and more to firm, plump, and promote glowing skin. We tested various textures such as gel-like formulas, thick sheets, or gentle serums. The best ones were also affordable, and most fell around the $20 price point.
