The spring 2027 menswear collections this month, in Milan and Paris, served up plenty of thrilling new styling propositions. Freaky footwear! Scarves as tops! The mood of the season was very much about rethinking everyday basics—and to inject your wardrobe with a fresh sense of whimsy and personality. And yes, it turns out that even extends to something as utilitarian as a belt.
When Michael Rider debuted his latest Celine assortment earlier this week, he proposed a suite of modern designs—but I simply could not take my eyes off those dainty little chain belts. Simple tank tops and straight-leg jeans were paired with thin, beaded waist belts—as though they were DIY’d at summer camp as a fun art project. They felt less functional, and more meant to be sweet and charming—an unexpected accent to the rigid and masculine clothes.
The accessories instantly transformed the whole looks, so much so that it made me wonder: Why have I never considered trying the chain belt before?

Celine is not the only label who embraced the statement belt this season. Brands like Auralee paired jeans with a thin little chain belt with little fruit charms on it (a deft light touch by stylist Charlotte Collet); at Sacai, the heftier chained belts—finished in mixed metals—added instant edge to the all-black designs. If you’ve ever wondered why even the most simple of runway looks have a high-fashion feel, it’s likely because of the addition of pieces such as these saucy little belts: They’re total outfit-makers. And this epiphany has totally rocked my world.
I mean, think about it, it’s a genius styling trick. On the days when you’re feeling far too uninspired to throw together a cool look—especially amid a brutal summer heatwave, when you want to wear as little layers as possible—a chain belt can do all the heavy lifting for your ensemble. Even when paired with jeans and a tee, a well-placed belt instantly makes a statement. And there’s plenty of options: You can go luxe with a vintage Chanel gold chain style, or there are plenty of affordable styles on the market, too—such as the decorative shell belts from Chan Luu. Invest in one great belt, and you can transform your entire summer wardrobe in one fell swoop. (Or rummage in your bedroom draws.)
