I’m not ashamed to admit that when I first started wearing makeup, I didn’t know how to apply eyeliner properly. Now, it’s become a signature look, and I’m rarely spotted without a variety of different colors, ombré effects, and even glitter liner. But the road to getting here was a long one. In fact, I’m willing to show photographic evidence below to give you an idea of just how far I have come from those early days.
If you’ve ever found yourself in the same position, cursing your shaky hands or making each wing thicker and thicker trying to get them slightly even—you’re not alone. But, fear not, because sleek, sharp wings are within reach and can be achieved by anybody, regardless of their skill level. Below find out how to apply eyeliner, according to makeup artists.
What do I need to properly apply eyeliner?
Before you begin applying eyeliner, you need the right tools to achieve the look. This was the first mistake I made when I started wearing makeup; having little knowledge about the correct tools (and how to use them) meant that I wasn’t achieving the look that I envisioned. Here’s what I use for my daily eyeliner:
A mirror
Ideally, not a handheld one, so you can keep both hands free while applying your eyeliner. A lighted makeup mirror is great for clear and better close-ups at night.
Eyeliner
There are many different options here, and your choice will come down to personal preference. Whether you’re a liquid eyeliner lover or prefer pencil, the application and finish are heavily influenced by the medium that you choose.
“My recommendation for beginners is a pencil always,” says makeup artist Taisha Sherwood. “It’s easier to control the amount of product you’re applying, and it’s easier to fix if you make mistakes. Once liquid or gel eyeliner dries, it’s harder to move around. However, if you prefer a super sharp line, you can always go in with a liquid or gel liner for more depth and a sharper effect.”
