“I realized I had an excessive amount of denim in my wardrobe when I noticed I was reaching for the same few pairs over and over again,” Xandria says. “If you’re only wearing a pair once or twice a year, it’s probably not earning its place in your closet.”
The best reason to buy another pair
Obviously, the denim trend cycle isn’t going anywhere. “Social media and fashion trends definitely create pressure to buy the latest denim,” O’Neill says. “Every season seems to introduce a new silhouette.”
Abbe acknowledges that influence. “All of it, honestly,” she says when asked how much pressure comes from trends and social media versus actual wardrobe needs. “In reality, we need one of each fit and style, but we all buy more than we really need.”
The best reason to buy another pair, experts say, isn’t because an algorithm convinced you to.
“I’ve become much more intentional about investing in jeans as a core part of my capsule wardrobe,” Evans says. “Instead of chasing every new trend, I focus on finding silhouettes that I know I’ll wear on repeat.”
Xandria offers a healthy reminder—especially for anyone hanging onto jeans that no longer fit.
“After graduating college, I gained weight and found myself holding onto my favorite pairs of smaller-size jeans ‘just in case’ I fit into them again one day,” she says. “I soon realized that it wasn’t my body’s job to fit into my jeans, it was my jeans’ job to fit my body.”
In the end, there’s the real answer to how many jeans one person really needs.
The experts I spoke with disagreed on the exact number. Some could happily live with three pairs. Others preferred 10. But they all agreed on the principle: Every pair should earn its place and serve a distinct purpose in your wardrobe, and should fit the body you have now.
Maybe that’s why replacing all my skinny jeans with wide-leg styles never quite solved my own denim dilemma. It wasn’t that I needed more jeans. I needed the right ones, and the right variety. It’s not every silhouette fashion tells us to buy. And it’s definitely not every trend that serves us scarily targeted Instagram ads.
It’s simply enough pairs that fit our bodies, suit our lives, reflect our personal style, and are the ones we genuinely want to wear.
