Lips have long been a favorite feature to enhance, but lately they seem to be getting a little more attention than usual. Thanks in part to celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Kylie Jenner, and Kim Kardashian, the lip look du jour has evolved far beyond a swipe of lip balm or a touch of lipstick. Right now it’s all about a glossy, softly sculpted, and subtly fuller-looking lip that somehow still appears effortless.

Yet as effortless as recent lip trends appear, they do require some know-how. Whether you’re hoping to create the illusion of more volume or simply define your natural shape, choosing the right product—and knowing how to use it—can make all the difference.

The first step? Understanding the difference between lip contouring and traditional lip liner. After all, not all lip pencils are the same: Some are used to define the lip line, while others are used to manipulate volume to make lips appear larger or fuller.

Below, a makeup pro shares advice on understanding the difference between lip contouring and lip lining, as well as tips for mastering each.

    Lip Contouring vs. Lip Liner

While the terms are often used interchangeably, they create very different effects. Traditional lip liner focuses on definition. It creates a crisp outline, prevents lipstick from feathering, and can subtly reshape the lips when desired. Lip contouring, by contrast, relies on softer shading. Instead of drawing attention to the outline itself, it creates the illusion of depth and dimension, making lips appear fuller without an obvious line.

In other words, if lip liner is about precision, lip contouring is about illusion.

    What Is Lip Contouring?

Unlike traditional lip liner, lip contouring is typically created with softer, more blendable products designed to diffuse rather than sharply define. It’s all about creating a soft contrast of shadows and highlights on and around the lips to sculpt them subtly, making them appear naturally fuller.

“Lip contouring is not about changing the shape of the lips but about enhancing their natural volume,” explains MAC global artist Michele Magnani. “It’s a technique based on subtle shadow and light that sculpts without being visible. While in recent seasons we’ve seen a growing focus on the ‘90s-lips aesthetic, lip contouring is now giving way to a polished yet understated smile.”

    How to Lip Contour

Contour pencils, creamy lip liners in taupe or neutral shades, contour sticks, illuminators, glosses, concealers, and even cream bronzers can all be used to create subtle shadows and highlights that make lips appear naturally fuller. Many beauty brands also offer dedicated lip-contour pencils, which are typically creamier and available in cooler, skin-toned shades designed to mimic natural shadows rather than lipstick colors.

Whatever products you use, remember that it’s all about creating a subtle effect. Rather than drawing a continuous, sharply defined line, apply the contour with light pressure only around the outer edges of the lips, concentrating slightly more color there (or sometimes underneath the center of the bottom lip), and blend inward with a brush or fingertip.

Remember, the goal is to create a gentle shadow—not a visible outline—so that the lips appear naturally fuller. According to Magnani, the key is restraint: “It’s always best to start with soft definition. This way, you can redefine the outline without creating a harsh line, and it blends perfectly with the lipstick rather than creating a noticeable contrast.”

Once you’ve softly defined the lips, choose your finish. “Lighter, more luminous textures are perfect for a natural look,” Magnani says. “For a longer-lasting effect, the best combination is with a lip tint, which sets immediately on the lips, keeping them fresh and hydrated.”
