High summer in Como is Amal Clooney at the peak of her fashion powers. But wherever she is—whether at home at Villa Oleandra, in Saint Tropez celebrating husband George’s 65th birthday, walking the Cannes Film Festival carpet, or enjoying a jaunt to Capri—Amal has her un’estate europea wardrobe down.
Earlier this week, Clooney was photographed in a water taxi heading toward the opulent and historic Villa Passalacqua, where she and her husband were hosting an exclusive fundraising dinner for the Clooney Foundation for Justice. The Clooneys were also joined by their two twins.
Amal opted for a look that ticks all of her summer gala dressing notes: a black vintage John Galliano bias cut dress with delicate spaghetti straps and colorful embroidered florals encircling the bodice, which she styled with gold fringe earrings, a burgundy, thick woven bucket bag, oversized dark sunglasses, and black stilettos. (She carried her shoes from the boat to the jetty.)
Her glam was also signature Amal: undulating brunette waves dappled with caramel highlights were swept over one shoulder, her mani-pedi a matching sheer pink, and her makeup was bronzed with a warm pink blush.

What, say you, makes an Amal Clooney summer status event look? Prized vintage is a must, of course, whether it’s Galliano or McQueen or Versace. Bias cut is preferred, but looks range from the draped and slinky to high-lows with trains. There’s usually a pair of chic oversized sunnies involved too to really channel Sophia Loren, and a statement accessory or shoe, like a suite of Cartier jewels or a structured and sleek clutch. Of course, Amal’s best accessory? Her always dapper partner. For the rest of us mere mortals? An edit of the best summertime dresses, here.
