As a resident of the upper Midwest, the northern lights are a really big deal; people travel miles and miles just to see them. But now, I don’t have to drive a few hours to glimpse that gorgeous, neon-streaked sky—I can just look at Zara Larsson’s eye makeup!
The Swedish pop icon returned to her homeland for the Way Out West music festival in Gothenburg and paid homage to Scandinavia and the northern lights with her signature colorful, glittering makeup, crafted by makeup artist Sophia Sinot. Sinot applied a mix of seafoam green, cobalt blue, and violet shadows to Larsson’s lids, applying the pastel green shade all over the eye, up to the brow, and underneath Larsson’s lashline, then defined her eyes with bright blue and a pop of vivid violet in the crease, similar to how the vibrant colors of the northern lights dance across the night sky. The color-saturated eye makeup would have been impressive in its own right, but Sinot went one step further and applied a generous handful of rhinestones to serve as “stars” across Larsson’s face, starting at her temple and twinkling in a diagonal direction down to the hollow of one pink-blushed cheek. As a fun finishing touch, hairstylist Adam Lukacs added cloudlike streaks of sky blue to Larsson’s blonde curls.
Music and makeup fans were equally obsessed with the latest installment in Larsson and Sinot’s increasingly stunning concert looks. “They’re gonna put yall in the Smithsonian of best duo,” wrote one Instagram commenter, and they were absolutely right; should a makeup museum exist, these creative collabs would absolutely need their own exhibit. Other commenters requested a coffee table book of Larsson’s makeup, which is honestly a genius idea.
Nature has been a central theme of Larsson and Sinot’s glam routine this year, including animals—like leopard print eyes and sparkly cat whiskers—and underwater creatures. Larsson said in a comment that the northern lights-inspired glam was in her “top 5” of all time, which is a pretty big deal given how many creative looks the two have come up with thus far. Can they top it? For these two, the sky is the limit.
