Out of all the makeup products available now, blush has been one of the most reinvented as of late—and truly, it seems like there are more formulas, shades, and application techniques available than ever before. Good news for beauty geeks, perhaps, but a dilemma for those of us who prefer to stick to the tried-and-true. After all, having endless options can make choosing the perfect one extra hard.
The question becomes especially tricky as skin begins to age, since not every texture is universally flattering. It makes sense: Starting in our 40s and 50s, skin gradually loses collagen and hyaluronic acid, leaving it thinner, drier, and less plump, while making fine lines and uneven texture more visible. As a result, certain makeup formulas—particularly dry or heavily powdered ones—can settle into those lines or emphasize texture rather than melting seamlessly into the skin.

According to Araceli Marcilla of NARS’s training department in Spain, cream, liquid, and moisturizing formulas tend to be the best bet for mature skin. “Those are particularly flattering options for mature skin,” she says. “Liquid and moisturizing textures blend better into the skin, avoiding the accentuation of fine lines or skin texture.”
There’s a noticeable difference in the final effect. “While powder blush offers a more blended and velvety finish, the liquid version provides a dewy, natural effect, as if the color were coming from within the skin.”
Liquid formulas also tend to be more buildable, Marcilla explains, making it easier to control the intensity. You can start with a tiny bit to create the faintest flush and gradually add more color without sacrificing a fresh, luminous finish.

Now that we’ve resolved the powder-versus-cream dilemma, let’s examine another quintessential blush question: What’s the best way to apply blush to mature skin?
“A key tip is to apply the blush in very light layers and blend it immediately, ideally with your fingers, since the warmth of the skin helps the formula blend better,” says Marcilla.
Placement matters, too. “On more mature skin, it works especially well to avoid the center of the cheek and concentrate the product on the upper part of the cheekbone, blending upward. This not only provides a more natural finish but also creates a very flattering optical lifting effect.”
As for setting your blush, that requires restraint. Since liquid formulas may not have quite the staying power of powder, layering it with powder blush is certainly an option—just be careful not to overdo it. “Although you can use a powder blush to increase its staying power, it’s best to keep the skin as dewy as possible, without too much powder, so that the blush retains that fresh, luminous finish,” Marcilla advises.
