After a trip to Puerto Vallarta this past June, I made a vow to myself: I will never again travel to a rainy, humid climate without a good shampoo for frizzy hair. Though the mountainous views were stunning, the state of my hair throughout my stay was not, and I spent my beach days in a tizzy of frizz.
Jackie Seabrooke, a celebrity hairstylist based in New York City, assured me that my hair nightmare was, alas, not unique. “When hair is dry and lacks moisture, it tries to absorb moisture from the air, causing the cuticle to swell and become frizzy,” she explained. “This is why hair tends to look even more frizzy in humid conditions.” But sometimes, unsightly frizz doesn’t even come with margaritas on the side.
Seabrooke said that even day-to-day activities—like washing with too-hot water, heat damage, rough towel drying, and genetics—can all play into hair that’s more staticky than silky. And though styling products can be a savior, frizz control starts in the shower.
Vogue’s Favorite Shampoos for Frizzy Hair
According to hairstylist and celebrity makeup artist Leticia Llesmin, a good anti-frizz shampoo can help the hair feel “supple and light while keeping flyaways in check.” These formulas, Llesmin said, tend to contain moisturizing ingredients like glycerin, panthenol, oils, or butters. Shampoos with proteins help strengthen weak spots in the strands, she says, and—since sulfates can dry out the hair—sulfate-free formulas are key.
