The story, published anonymously (by “a lady”) in 1811, follows the Dashwood women—earnest and rational Elinor; headstrong, emotional Marianne; sweet young Margaret; and their mother, Mrs. Dashwood—as the two elder sisters struggle to parse the true feelings and circumstances of their paramours.
Famously adapted by Ang Lee and Emma Thompson in 1995, with a cast including Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, and Greg Wise, Sense and Sensibility is being reimagined yet again this fall, in a ravishing film by Georgia Oakley starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles.
