It may not be fall just yet, but there’s a witchy spirit in the air. . . thanks to all things Practical Magic, that is.
On September 11, Practical Magic 2 will be hitting theaters—almost three decades after the original cult-classic first graced the big screen. OG stars Nicole Kidman, Sandra Bullock, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest will all reprise their roles in the sequel, while newcomers Joey King and Maisie Williams join the cast.
In honor of the buzzy release, then, what better time is there than now to look back on the original 1998 premiere? After all, the Practical Magic 2 press tour has been full of fashions so far. Kidman in new Versace! Bullock in Givenchy! Let’s see if their nineties fashions hold up, too.

Fans of Kidman will be sad to know that the A-lister did not attend the 1998 premiere, held in October of that year—but her co-star Bullock was in attendance. The star wore a classic LBD by Dolce & Gabbana, the frock featuring a squared neckline and fitted corset-style waist. (So ’90s—right down to the dainty strappy heels.) The all-black styling is also very witch-coded: Call it method dressing before method dressing was a thing.
But Bullock was not the only star who showed up with a perfectly-nineties look. Channing, for one, wore a sleek leather overcoat with a black sheath dress—she, too, finishing off the look with strappy heels—very Calvin. It’s a look that is so representative of the era, yet still feels fresh today.
