Welcome to Just My Type, a monthly series where Glamour editors test-drive the latest and greatest in makeup, hair, and skincare. No one has time for products that work against their natural features, so we try them across a range of skin tones, skin types, and hair textures. In this month’s installment, our editors review Fenty Beauty’s newest foundation launch. Read on to find out if it was just our type, because it might just be yours, too.
If you’re a tinted moisturizer fan, you know it takes a really special formula to convince you to reach for a foundation—let alone one with a matte finish. But a lot has changed since the days of heavy, cakey, and overly drying foundations. Modern-day formulas are often weightless and tout ingredients like hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to plump up the skin and keep it hydrated—while evening out tone and smoothing over textured spots. Fenty Beauty’s new Pro Filt’r Fluid Flex Natural Matte Foundation is the latest iteration of this updated approach to matte, acting more like a flexible, ultra-lightweight tinted moisturizer. Beyond the feel, the formula is supposed to deliver a long-lasting, velvety finish—and, of course, comes in Fenty’s signature range of diverse shades and undertones.
Fenty Beauty’s Pro Filt’r Fluid Flex Natural Matte Foundation
Here, we put it to the test by enlisting four Glamour editors with a variety of skin complexions and tones. But first, let’s review a little more about what makes this formula so special.
About the formula
Before we talk about what’s new, here’s what you need to know about its predecessor, the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation. When Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty in 2017, this formula was a force to be reckoned with, thanks to one of the most inclusive shade ranges ever to hit shelves: 40 shades (with 10 more launched in 2019). While that may seem like a bare minimum for foundation these days, back then it wasn’t common outside of pro brands like MAC. It had a buildable, matte finish that controlled oil for all-day wear. With its satin-matte technology and expansive shade range, the original Pro Filt’r Soft Matte foundation revolutionized how other brands approached shades, undertones, and pigments when building their own foundation libraries.
The new Pro Filt’r formula is a more modern version of the OG, thanks to years of consumer requests, notes, and feedback. It comes in 50 shades, including cool, warm, and neutral undertones, so there’s something for almost everyone. It still features the same satin-matte finish as the original, but with more buildable and flexible coverage for a true skin-like finish. Here’s a look at the formula’s key features:
- Starfruit Extract acts as a powerful antioxidant to help decrease inflammation and dark spots. It helps increase skin brightness, as well as elasticity and collagen for a vibrant skin finish.
- Waterproof formula—but doesn’t feel like a typical waterproof foundation, which can feel heavy and settle into uneven texture. This formula is super lightweight, sinks into the skin almost immediately, and is very flexible to apply: a little truly goes a long way. The best part? You can wear it the whole day without creasing, slipping, or smudging.
- The shade range features a ton of undertones. Whether your skin skews golden, peach, olive, or pink, there are multiple shades with different undertone options to guarantee a close match.
- It’s non-comedogenic, too, making it perfect for acne- and oily-skin types who tend to break out when using full-coverage formulas. All the pigment without clogging your pores or making you greasy? Sign us up.
