On Monday night—amid the New York Fashion Week frenzy—editors, performers, designers, and friends of Vogue gathered at the Juilliard School to celebrate one of the season’s most exciting debuts: that of Gustavo Dudamel, Juilliard students, and New York Philharmonic musicians in the September issue.
“There was a lot going on in popular culture this summer, but I spent most of it telling anyone who would listen how thrilling it was that Dudamel would be at the New York Phil,” said Chloe Malle. “I felt that Norman Jean Roy and Theo Wenner captured the best of what we have in New York: culture and rigor but also playfulness and fun.”
The cocktail party, which was hosted in partnership with Aritzia—who collaborated with Juilliard on a new collection—embodied that same mix of serious talent and fun. The crowd ate caviar potato chips and sipped signature cocktails (“Gustavo’s Gimlet” and “Maestro’s Manhattan”), while mingling over jazzy piano tunes played by Juilliard alum Joel Wenhardt.

For those who were leafing through the magazine, a few familiar faces seemed to jump from the page to the room: many of the young Juilliard virtuosos and Philharmonic musicians from the fashion story, and the maestro himself. The students posed for a photo with Dudamel, beaming. “I’ve heard that name since I was a toddler,” said Celia Wójcik, a Juilliard oboist featured in the portfolio. “Getting to be alongside him in Vogue magazine and also meet him at Juilliard was surreal.”
