Fall’s Breakout Manicure Shade is Shocking

Fall nail trends tend to tell a familiar story each year: chocolate brown, burgundy, taupe… While shades that evoke russet apples and crunchy leaves are always charming, at a certain point it all fades into mulch. Enter: Chartreuse nails, the energetic trend for fall 2026 that’s broken free of the season’s usual warm-toned tyranny.

While the noxious green is a novel addition to cooler temperature manicures, the shade is no newcomer. Who could forget Brat Summer? While Brat, of course, is long buried, the excitement around the shade has lingered—see the taffeta bubble skirts peeking out at Prada’s spring/summer 2026 show, or the lustrous crinoline dress that sashayed down the Simone Rocha runway that same season.

“It still feels fresh and seasonal on the nails, an autumnal move on from spring/summer’s ‘matcha’ craze,” says Giorgia Cappella, head of product and education at nail polish line The Gel Bottle. Manicurist Megan Caie agrees. “It’s not trying to fight the classic fall manicure, instead it’s loud enough to make a statement but still has that mossy, autumnal undertone that feels season appropriate.”

Below, discover their tips on how best to apply this radioactive hit.

Find the version that suits your skin tone

Concerned chartreuse won’t work on you? The experts insist that it will, so long as you pick the right shade. “Look at the undertone, not the depth,” says Capella. “Cooler, blue-based skin tones tend to suit a chartreuse with more green in it, while warmer, golden undertones can carry a yellower, almost citrus tone. I sometimes test it against the back of my wrist, like you would with a foundation.” Caie adds: “On deeper skin tones, chartreuse genuinely comes alive, the contrast is gorgeous and it doesn’t wash out the way it can on paler skin, so don’t be shy about going bold there. If you are on the paler side, I’d just go slightly softer and less acid-bright, so it doesn’t overpower.”

    Prep the nail properly

“With a bold shade, you can really see the growth as you get closer to your next appointment, so prep is key,” Capella explains. “It’s a bold shade, so it pays to think about shape and length before committing. On shorter, rounded or almond nails it reads playful and wearable, while on longer squares or coffin shapes it takes on a much more dramatic, statement-making energy.” Caie concurs, recommending paying careful attention to the cuticles before adding a base coat to fill nail ridges and prevent staining.
