Denim has always been a go-to in my wardrobe—and is undeniably the most versatile piece you can own. It works for off-duty weekends, in the office, and even for travel. The key silhouettes in my collection have always consisted of straight-leg jeans (a forever classic) and wide-leg pairs that feel loose yet sleek.
Lately, however, a newcomer has entered my wardrobe: barrel-leg denim, also known as horseshoe or balloon-leg denim. Not exactly your average wide-leg, and not quite tapered, the silhouette hits at the hips, curves outward through the leg, and narrows slightly at the ankle. It adds the right amount of volume, yet is surprisingly flattering. The shape can feel a bit divisive, but over time it has quickly risen through the ranks to become a fashion favorite. I personally love the barrel-leg denim; it adds a sculptural element to any look and is sartorial yet incredibly comfortable.

These sculptural denim shapes have received plenty of attention since Pieter Mulier sent them down the runway for Alaïa’s fall 2023 collection. Since then, barrel-leg denim has become a staple across many denim brands, offered in different washes and lengths. The silhouette originated in workwear, designed to be easy and functional for freedom of movement.
Today, endless options can make it even harder to find the right pair. I tested several styles to see which ones best suit my preferences.
B Sides Slim Lasso High-Rise Barrel Leg Jeans
B Sides makes some of my favorite denim silhouettes, and these barrel-leg jeans have a slim horseshoe shape without feeling overly bold. The slim barrel-leg cut is a perfect entry point into the trend. They’re made from rigid denim that softens and stretches slightly with wear. I styled mine with a navy button-down for tonal contrast of blues. This silhouette is available in an array of washes. B Sides offers this shape in a relaxed version.
Kallmeyer Callum Barrel-Leg Jeans
I first tried these on at Kallmeyer’s Lower East Side flagship while casually browsing. I initially came across the Callum in blue, then tried on the white pair and instantly wanted to buy them. Note: For this style, I sized down two sizes; I am normally a 27 and bought a 25. This barrel leg has a bold arch, but it’s still subtle. They feature a five-button closure and make for a great pair to wear year-round.
Khaite Karo Denim
I haven’t worn low-rise denim in, I want to say, 15 years or more, so I was excited to try Khaite’s Karo jeans in this barrel-leg shape. I personally love rinse-wash denim and always gravitate toward darker washes. I also love that these are cuffed at the hem, which adds something extra to the barrel-leg silhouette. The 32-inch inseam meant pumps were a must for added height. These Khaite jeans may have changed my mind about the low-rise silhouette.

These Róhe barrel-leg jeans make for an easy yet elevated everyday pair. Cut in a classic light-blue wash, they feel relaxed without looking too dressed down. The silhouette is beautifully tailored and easy to dress up or down—the kind of denim you can style with everything from flats to boots.

Agolde Luna Denim
The moment I tried on these Agolde denim, I knew I loved them. This silhouette is available in an array of shades. These are cut in a dark wash and made with lightweight denim, making them a great year-round option and possibly good to layer hosiery under during cooler months. The barrel leg’s curve is more noticeable here, creating a more dramatic silhouette emphasized by the high rise.

Levi’s Drop Barrel
The Levi’s Drop Barrel jeans are part of the brand’s Blue Tab collection and come at a slightly more elevated price point, thanks to their Japanese denim construction. They have a sharply curved shape while still feeling relaxed and slouchy. To date, these have been one of my favorite barrel-leg silhouettes.
Mother Half Pipe Denim
If you are looking for a cropped version of barrel-leg denim, or simply a petite style, these make for a great transitional pair and are easy to style with anything from flats to boots. What I loved was the relaxed barrel-leg shape without being overly exaggerated. This denim is also softer, making it particularly comfortable for travel.

COS Bay Barrel Leg Denim
The COS Bay Barrel Leg jeans are a great everyday option. I styled mine with a purple turtleneck and ballet flats. Cut from classic midweight denim and available in six different washes, they’re an easy go-to pair you can wear daily.
DL1961 Taylor Ultra Rise High Rise Denim
If you gravitate toward wide-leg denim, this pair is an easy transition into the barrel-leg silhouette. The shape feels relaxed rather than overly exaggerated, making it versatile enough for a variety of occasions. It’s cut from mid-wash denim and has an ultra-high rise for a flattering, elongated fit.
