Say what you will about a fine leather handbag or a perfectly tailored wool coat, but when it comes to considered yet somehow effortless style, nothing beats a good old-fashioned graphic T-shirt.
Sometimes, they’re adorned with cheeky slogans, like Emily Dawn Long’s celeb-loved “Spoiled Boys” tee that swept Hollywood’s leading men this summer—a category she expanded on this season—or Valentino’s angsty “Villain Teen,” which creative director Alessandro Michele introduced on shirts and baseball caps during resort and has continued in the spring 2027 collection earlier this week. True to the brand’s signature humor, new Moschino co-creative directors Loris Messina and Simone Rizzo concluded their debut collection with a fitted “Good Luck” shirt—ironically, a fitting self-sent message for the seasons ahead. Lacoste presented a similar self-awareness, presenting a clay-court-stained graphic on a “sweat look” white tee dress.
Off the runways in Paris, king of graphic T-shirts Alexander Skarsgård stepped out in yet another gem emblazoned with a weather map of the US. The national report? “Pretty Shitty.” Ironically, unlike the absolute scorcher that was menswear in June and New York Fashion Week in September, a chillier and welcome fall temperature is descending, which means it’s the perfect time for seasonal layering—just take notes from Dries Van Noten’s movie poster-printed tee, styled under a V-neck dress with the shoulders rolled.
While designer graphic T-shirts are nothing new (See: Loewe’s “Told Ya” T-shirt as a nod to JFK Jr or even Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren’s Seditionaries pieces), designers just can’t stay away. Like a good baseball hat, we all don a T-shirt more than we do a gown. On the practical side, they’re a great entry item for luxury customers who are dipping their toes, and on the creative side, a satirical graphic or snarky phrase is a great reminder that not all runway collections need be so haughty.
