    Frequently asked questions

    Do wrinkle patches really work?

“Wrinkle patches can offer temporary improvements in the appearance of fine lines, particularly when used overnight,” says Kristina Collins, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Austin. “They work primarily by physically smoothing the skin and preventing muscle movement that causes expression lines.” Occlusive materials like silicone patches also help trap moisture and improve skin hydration, which can make wrinkles appear less pronounced, while any added ingredients like retinol or vitamin C offer even more antiaging benefits, she says. “However, results are short-term and not a substitute for long-term antiaging treatments like retinoids, antioxidants, or in-office procedures.”

How do you use a wrinkle patch?

According to the experts we spoke with, it’s key to follow instructions on the back of any wrinkle patch you pick up. Typically, you can use them at least once per week, up to three or four times a week depending on the recommended directions. If you have sensitive skin that’s easily irritated, start with once per week and build up tolerance as you go. It’s also important to apply them on clean, dry skin.

Are there any drawbacks to using wrinkle patches?

While wrinkle patches can be a convenient and noninvasive way to target fine lines and wrinkles, there are a few potential drawbacks to keep in mind. Some users may experience skin irritation or redness, especially if they have sensitive skin or allergies to adhesive ingredients. (If you have particularly sensitive skin or underlying skin conditions, it’s a good idea to do a patch test first or consult with a dermatologist before use.)

The patches also typically need to be worn for several hours or overnight, which might be uncomfortable or inconvenient for some. And results tend to be subtle and temporary. Think of wrinkle patches as more of a complementary treatment rather than a replacement for consistent skin care routines and professional procedures.

How do wrinkle patches compare to Botox?

Wrinkle patches are very different from Botox. Botox relaxes the muscle that causes the wrinkle, while wrinkle patches work by keeping the skin still and hydrated. “When you place a patch over the skin, it helps hold the area still, similar to taping, so the muscles underneath aren’t repeatedly creasing the skin overnight,” says Jessie Cheung, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in New York and Chicago. The patch also traps moisture, temporarily plumping the skin and softening fine lines. Because patches don’t change muscle activity, their effects are temporary and cosmetic, unlike the longer-lasting smoothing you get from Botox.

What do dermatologists recommend for wrinkles on the face?

Dermatologists usually focus on two things: preventing damage and supporting collagen, says Dr. Cheung. “At home, the most important steps are daily sunscreen, a retinoid, and good barrier-supporting skin care with ingredients like peptides, ceramides, and antioxidants,” she says. “Retinoids have the strongest evidence for improving fine lines over time because they help stimulate collagen and normalize skin turnover.”

In-office treatments can target wrinkles more directly. Neuromodulators like Botox relax the muscles that cause expression lines, while procedures like lasers, microneedling, biostimulatory injectables, and energy-based devices help stimulate collagen and improve skin quality, says Dr. Cheung. For the best results, dermatologists often recommend combining good daily skin care with professional treatments that address both muscle movement and the structure of the skin.

What should you avoid doing if you use a wrinkle patch?

Pooja Rambhia, MD and board-certified dermatologist based in New Jersey, says not to put wrinkle patches on irritated, broken or sunburned skin. “Don’t place them on the eyelid itself, either, and don’t layer them over strong actives like retinoids, which can increase irritation,” she says. “Avoid them until your skin has fully healed after a laser treatment or peel as well.”

How we evaluated the best wrinkle patches

We evaluated wrinkle patches based on their ingredients, the process of application, and effectiveness in minimizing fine lines and wrinkles. The best ones had a potent blend of antiaging ingredients like retinol, hyaluronic acid, and peptides to help soften skin, hydrate, and gently exfoliate. The facial patches we landed on were mostly comfortable to wear (even if they took a little time to get used to), and didn’t cause a ton of redness or irritation when we peeled them off. Lastly, the ones that made the cut make a noticeable difference in our fine lines and wrinkles, managing to smooth them out and soften texture over time.
