I’ve always been a pants girl. Jeans, low-waisted trousers, oversized sweats—I’ve always gravitated towards pieces you can throw on without overthinking and still feel like yourself. Skirts have never really been off the table, but they’ve only ever played a supporting role in my wardrobe.
That might be about to change. Following the latest shows, I’ve found myself flirting with skirts a little harder. Prada’s spring 2027 show, built around the idea of the skirt—63 of them, to be exact—planted the first seeds in my mind. Green shoots then bloomed after seeing Matthieu Blazy’s spring 2027 collection for Chanel. “For me, the skirt is like a T-shirt. I put all my ideas there,” Mrs. Prada famously stated in a 2006 interview.
Both shows got me thinking: could I, a devoted pants girl, genuinely make the switch? If Miuccia Prada sees the skirt as an everyday essential, perhaps I should start treating it like one, too. The trick—for me at least—is to style a skirt the way I would my favorite pair of trousers. Nothing too precious, nothing that feels overly put together. The skirt doesn’t have to be pencil thin; form-fitting and high on the waist. And it doesn’t necessarily need to be worn with heels either.
As Blazy and Mrs. Prada prove, a skirt can sit on the lower waist, or come in a stretch poplin that’s easy for me to bike in. It can have side pockets—to hold my phone or a pacifier—and be belted, because why not? Contrast is key to making the skirt feel more like me. I want that same nonchalant feel I get from wearing jeans—just with a different silhouette. Borrowing from menswear codes helps to keep the look relaxed and resist the urge to make the skirt the entire statement.
I know won’t be giving up pants altogether—but for now, I’m certainly more open to the idea of giving skirts a little more room in my wardrobe. Here’s how I’m styling spring’s skirt trends for right now.
