Frequently asked questions
What are the best types of eyebrow dye for sparse brows?
For those with thinner or sparse brows, Healy prefers dyes that lightly stain the skin beneath the brows as well as the brow hairs. “That subtle skin tint helps fill in gaps and creates the illusion of density without having to rely solely on makeup afterwards,” he says. Augustoni agrees: “Adding color will always help to enhance a sparse brow.”
Should eyebrows be lighter or darker than hair?
It depends on personal preference. Generally, brows should be slightly lighter than very dark hair and slightly darker than very light hair. “The goal is balance,” says Healy. “Brows that are too dark can feel heavy, while brows that are too light can disappear and leave the face looking unfinished.” Depending on personal style, Augustoni says that the darker brows against lighter hair and light eyes can be very striking. But if your hair is darker and you have dark eyes, you may choose to stay close to your natural shade. “It’s more about matching undertones (warm, neutral, or cool) than just ‘lighter’ or ‘darker,'” explains Healy. Regardless of whichever at-home dye you choose and style you want to perpetuate, he recommends erring on the lighter side and building slowly. “You can always go darker later, but overly dark brows are much harder to fix,” Healy says.
What exactly should you look for in an eyebrow dye when shopping?
Shop for a tint designed for at-home use. “Look for brow-safe formulas with clear timing instructions, predictable color payoff, and shades that lean neutral rather than overly warm,” Healy explains. Brow-safe formulas will have ingredient disclosure, will state that the product is ophthalmologist or dermatologist tested, and where appropriate, compliance with cosmetic regulations in the region where sold. “Generally safe oxidative tint systems use hydrogen peroxide developers in controlled strengths combined with approved dye intermediates and couplers. Fragrance-free or low-fragrance formulas can be beneficial for sensitive skin. Transparency and clear usage instructions are good indicators of a responsible brand,” says Healy.
Consider opting for dyes with gentle ingredients—such as panthenol, glycerin, aloe vera, or plant-derived emollients that help offset dryness—and those that lean toward organic, vegan formulations, says Augustoni. Vegetable-based dyes are preferred for sensitive skin, adds Healy.
Is there a difference between eyebrow dyeing and eyebrow tinting?
They’re often used interchangeably, but they’re not the same. “Tinting is usually softer and more temporary, while dyeing tends to last longer and creates a soft skin stain,” says Healy. Augustoni explains that an eyebrow dye lasts up to a month, whereas a tint lasts only 3 to 4 days. Whether you use a dye or tint, “the results depend more on the formula and technique than the label,” explains Healy.
How do you dye your brows at home?
Start with a product made for brows. Diana Augustoni of Onda Beauty says brow dye formulas take the delicate skin in the area into account. Mix it well before applying, advises celebrity eyebrow specialist Joey Healy. Sania Vucetaj, founder of Sania’s Brow Bar, suggests using a mascara spoolie to brush the dye gently over the hairs, which applies it evenly and keeps it off the skin underneath.
Healy says to choose a lighter shade than you think you need and leave it on for two to five minutes, but follow the instructions for your specific product. He recommends building color slowly: “You can always go darker later, but overly dark brows are much harder to fix.” Dye can’t be removed if you dislike the result, so be sure before you start, says Vucetaj. Her brow shampoo can help ensure you remove all the dye so it doesn’t continue to develop after you take it off with a wet washcloth.
How long does eyebrow dye last?
Vucetaj says the eyebrow dye effect usually lasts up to two to three weeks.
Can you use hair dye on eyebrows?
Vucetaj doesn’t usually recommend it, because dye can be harsh on the delicate brow follicle. If you do it at home anyway, she suggests a root touch-up dye for stubborn hairs and says the colors are pretty accurate. Healy says Just For Men Mustache & Beard is often used off-label on brows because it is designed for coarse facial hair and has a shorter processing time than traditional box dyes. He recommends it especially for graying brows. Follow the instructions on whichever product you use.
We spoke with brow experts about their favorite eyebrow dyes for at-home use. The winners were easy to use, long-lasting, and deposited the best color for a range of hair color shades. The best ones were salon-quality, provided full coverage, and had (for the most part) plant-based formulations. We paid special attention to ingredients, texture, how well they deposited color, and longevity. We also found tints that lasted a few days but that had a significant impact on brow hue for those looking for lower-commitment color.
