There’s something about taking the 6 train uptown to Coach House during the early morning hustle and bustle that’s quintessential New York. The subway—packed and a little chaotic—dropped me off, along with the usual grouping of suited commuters, near 5th Avenue, where the brand’s flagship sits comfortably in the heart of city’s luxury aisle. Founded in 1941 in Manhattan’s Garment District, it’s one of the few names on the stretch that can actually claim the NYC as its origin story.

The store makes that identity impossible to miss. At the entrance, rotating racks display oversized versions of the brand’s iconic bag charms—yellow taxis, red apples, the Statue of Liberty, a Tabby bag. At the center of the first floor, a dinosaur assembled entirely from leather bags stands guard. Their classics, all named after iconic New York sights and neighborhoods are on proud display: the Empire carryall, the Brooklyn tote, and Chelsea flap bag.
Leather craftsmanship is embedded in the brand’s DNA: In 1946, Coach developed a propriety process for tanning skins, crafting bags and small goods that were made to last—a legacy that lives on in the second floor Repairs Workshop. For many, Coach also represents the earliest brush with designer luxury. Whether passed down or saved up to purchase, who doesn’t have fond memories of their first Coach bag?
Stuart Vevers, the brand’s creative director who joined in 2013, has continued to anchor the brand firmly within the city’s cultural zeitgeist. His spring/summer 2026 collection—with pieces available on the third floor, reached via a staircase lined with a mural of the city skyline—reads as a love letter to New York’s kinetic energy. Weathered leathers, vintage-inspired wardrobe staples, and playful summer dresses fill the racks alongside a dedicated footwear section spanning sneakers, sandals, flats, and heels. The Heirlooms
Coach’s handbags are made for daily use, informed by decades of leather craftsmanship—during its early days, the brand looked to the soft patina of leather baseball mitts to develop designs such as the Cashin tote and Court bag. Today, the line-up features options for every setting, and in plenty of materials. I quickly reached for the Brooklyn carryall tote, offered in various leathers and even a raffia iteration for summer. The Tabby Flap bag, with its leather chain, balances uptown polish with downtown edge—carrying a contrast that defines NYC style. I couldn’t leave without checking out the Empire carryall, the Lana bag, and Bleecker bucket—three other favorites.
