Michelle Obama is flexing her fashion muscles.

While the former First Lady has been known to rock fresh Matthieu Blazy Chanel and candy-colored Loewe of late, in recent weeks her wardrobe has also come to be defined by a deep intentionality—not just the recognizable labels.

Take the opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago last month: the former FLOTUS and her stylist, Meredith Koop, tapped Acne Studios to create a custom skirt bearing the portrait of Obama’s late mother, Marian Robinson. Days later, while visiting local youth at the Obama Center’s media suite, she tried out the well-timed jersey trend in a Fear of God T-shirt, repping the number 44 as a nod to her husband’s presidency.

Now, she’s taking on the little black dress. Over the weekend, Obama marked America’s semiquincentennial at the 2026 Essence Festival of Culture, which bills itself as a celebration of Black excellence. For a live taping of her podcast, IMO, with Keke Palmer, Obama chose a black boatneck dress with a thigh-high slit, tiered rows of fringe embroidery, and grommets from Proenza Schouler’s fall 2026 collection.

The midi dress hailed from the brand’s first full collection by creative director Rachel Scott. While Scott took over Proenza Schouler last year from founders Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez, she first captured the industry’s attention with her independent label, Diotima, which regularly spotlights Jamaican crochet techniques.

The pick was a poignant one, as Scott is a Black Jamaican woman serving as the creative director of an American brand—a perfect fit for the occasion. It just goes to show that, for Michelle Obama, it’s never just a little black dress.
