Jenna Johnson on Personal Style, Favorite Trends, and ‘DWTS’ Costumes

The way we dress changes with us, and in our series—My Style, Lately—Glamour explores the instincts of women whose taste we trust: what they’re wearing, buying, loving, and rethinking right now. From wardrobe staples and under-$50 finds to beauty obsessions and splurges they swear were worth it, we uncover the pieces and products that help them feel most like themselves.

Jenna Johnson knows her angles. But after more than a decade of performing on TV as a professional ballroom dancer—first on So You Think You Can Dance, then on Dancing With the Stars—how could she not? “A bevel is a girl’s best friend,” she says, referring to the slight hip-and-leg placement dancers use to angle themselves into flattering nirvana on camera.

Johnson is part of a recent shift in the DWTS universe: What was once a family-room fixture has become an unexpectedly buzzy corner of pop culture, with a new generation fans—and smart social media strategies—turning its professional dancers into stars themselves. Johnson has been at the center of that evolution, making show history with its first same-sex partnership in 2021, receiving a 2024 Emmy nomination for her choreography, and winning the Mirrorball trophy in 2018 and again in 2024. The internet is already betting on Johnson to go far this season—if not take it all the way—with her new partner, Harry Shum Jr., who has danced backup for Beyoncé, was an instant fan favorite on Glee, and received the highest scores of the night during DWTS’ season 35 premiere Tuesday night.

Like most of her colleagues, Johnson has built a devoted following around a world that extends beyond ballroom. Her 1.4 million Instagram followers aren’t there just for dance videos; they follow along for snippets of her life with her husband, fellow pro Val Chmerkovskiy, their young son, the couple’s Los Angeles home, and of course, what she’s wearing.

After years of helping design her Dancing With the Stars costumes, Johnson knows what works for her body and lifestyle. Off camera she’s distilled it into a formula: feminine, sexy, modern, and functional. For someone whose career is literally built around movement, comfort matters—with some caveats. “You’ll never catch me in ballet flats…ever,” she says.

Her daily wardrobe moves easily from a mom uniform of matching workout sets, Prada sunglasses, white socks, and chunky New Balance sneakers to backless pieces, a silhouette Johnson says she discovered at work but has since incorporated into her going-out repertoire. “I love the shape that a low back brings,” she says. “You’ll notice it a lot in my DWTS costumes too.”

For the latest edition of My Style, Lately, Jenna Johnson audits her style right now: the trend she never expected to embrace, the wardrobe staple she’s wearing less of, the workout essential she owns in abundance, the beauty products she can’t live without, and more.
