Knowing how to use leave-in conditioner doesn’t seem like it’d be particularly challenging. You’ve got wet hair, you want it to look soft and shiny, so you spray (or press, or scrunch) a product into your hair. Easy peasy, no? But what formula? How much? Where in your routine does it go? Sure, you can wing it, but you might not get that salon-worthy style you were after, especially if you air-dry your locks. Leave-in conditioner is easy to use, but there are some pro tricks you should know before you slap it on your strands and call it a day. After all, the whole point of it is to make styling your hair easier. “Leave-in conditioner hydrates and softens hair, making it easier to detangle and style while reducing breakage,” says hairstylist Jennifer Korab. “It helps control frizz, adds shine, protects against heat and UV damage, and keeps color-treated hair looking vibrant.”

And if you think only curly and textured hair needs leave-in conditioner, all of you fine-haired and wavy ladies are missing out. “All hair types can benefit from leave-in conditioners,” says Korab. “It’s just about choosing the right formula.” Ahead, we’re breaking down a complete guide to all things leave-in conditioner, including how to choose the right formula for your hair type, how to apply leave-in conditioner, which product experts recommend, and more. If you’ve ever had a question about leave-ins, consider this story a guided path to a soft, glossy mane in minutes.

    What is a leave-in conditioner?

Leave-in conditioner is something pretty much everyone has heard of, but you may not know exactly what makes it different from your regular conditioner—except, you know, the whole leaving it in instead of washing it out. There’s a bit more to it, actually. “A leave-in conditioner is a cream, lotion, or liquid applied after washing and conditioning. Unlike regular conditioner, which you rinse out, it stays on the hair to soften and detangle,” says Rogerio Cavalcante, hairstylist and owner of The Second Floor Salon in NYC. Depending on the formula, leave-in conditioners typically control fizz, reduce excess volume, add shine, and protect against heat. He adds that they can also refresh hair when strands feel dry, fluffy, or dirty.
