When photographers Elizabeth and Holden Blanco began planning their destination wedding in Medellín, Colombia, the couple approached it with typically artistic flair. Inspired by the surrealist work of Colombian artist Fernando Botero and local textile artisans, the creative couple decided to flip the script and create a themed experience filled with unexpected moments of delight. “We really had a teamwork approach to this wedding, so we were the only ones that knew the schedule and knew all the little moments and surprises,” says Elizabeth.

Going against tradition felt appropriate for their relationship. The two were already legally married, having held a surprise ceremony at a housewarming party in Philadelphia back in 2023. The Medellín wedding would be a way to fully celebrate with both their American and Colombian sides of the family. “I think it took a lot of pressure off it being this one day,” says the bride. “I really wanted to just approach this whole wedding as a project, make stuff, and bring our own art into this.”

The couple’s wedding wardrobe was where that spirit truly shone. Elizabeth first felt she could lean into the performance element of their wedding when she came across an Odylyne the Ceremony wedding dress. After following the brand on Instagram, she saw they were hosting a trunk show at a Jenkinstown bridal salon about 30 minutes from where the couple lived in Philadelphia. “There was just one day I had available, and I thought it was meant to be,” says Elizabeth. Holden joined her as she went to try on their gowns, including an off-the-shoulder style with billowing fabric. “It was almost like costume in a way. It was big, voluminous, and really set the tone,” she recalls. “Once I saw that dress and put it on in my head, I thought: I have to have this. I need to lean in to this theme and really go for it.” Holden also loved the dress, and encouraged her to embrace the drama.
