A close friend recently told me she wanted to add color to her wardrobe. Her wardrobe is 90% black, and while she loves wearing it, she wants to lighten things up a bit. I understand, I also wear a lot of black, nearly every day. On the bottom, on the top, sometimes head-to-toe, and for a long time I didn’t think much of it.

But lately something is shifting. I see color everywhere. On the street, in stores, on my feed. Women in every shade, from muted pastels to saturated brights, and I find myself noticing how much black I actually wear. Color is having a moment, and I want in. The question is how?
Because here’s the thing about adding color to a wardrobe built on black: you can, theoretically, just swap one for the other. Black plus a color play well together, whereas going in all at once might have me looking like a popsicle. The goal is integration, not transformation. And the smartest way to do it is gradually, starting small and working your way up, especially for those who find color intimidating. The 2026 pre-fall collections offer a great blueprint.
