Yes, the Post-Breakup Glow-Up Is a Real Thing

There are countless examples that come to mind when I think of the “glow-up” effect that can follow a breakup. Sometimes it happens almost immediately, as though someone has finally shed a weight they’ve been carrying for years and can, at last, allow themselves to shine. Other times, it’s more gradual, intensifying as they work their way through the grief. But in both cases, reconnecting with oneself seems to lead inevitably to greater self-care: paying attention to the areas of our lives we’ve neglected and, ultimately, undergoing both a physical and emotional transformation.

“Often, after a separation, we may feel more attractive, more confident, somehow improved, with a special glow that other people notice, too. This is especially common when the breakup has brought a sense of relief and we’ve been able to shed a ‘burden’ that was making us unhappy and causing us distress,” explains psychologist and sexologist Ana Lombardía. She points out that feeling relaxed, confident, and “liberated” often translates into brighter skin, shinier hair, a more open smile, and a more polished appearance. “The relationship between body and mind is clear, direct, and goes both ways. If I feel good, my body improves, too; if my body is strong, my mind also feels clearer and fresher.”

This connection between what we feel and what we project has a biological explanation. Aesthetic medicine doctor Mar Mira describes the hormonal and physiological impact that prolonged emotional states can have on skin health. “If someone has spent months or years in a conflict-ridden environment, there is often a sustained elevation in cortisol. When that situation ends, sleep quality improves, microcirculation normalizes, and systemic inflammation decreases. And all of those changes show up in the skin.”

She notes that skin can appear more luminous as oxygenation improves, while the complexion becomes more even and that dull, tired appearance fades. Dark circles may become less pronounced as sleep improves and tension around the eyes decreases. Overall, facial expressions soften, and the face can appear more relaxed, more open, and emotionally lighter. “It’s also common to see improvements in preexisting inflammatory conditions, such as acne flare-ups, rosacea, or dermatitis. Even the hair can benefit, because as the neuroendocrine system stabilizes, hair loss may slow down and density can return.” As Dr. Mira explains, when someone feels liberated, they also tend to smile more, reconnect socially, and take better care of themselves—all things that the people around them notice immediately. Moreover, if the breakup is followed by a newly revived sex life, that can yield its own physical benefits.

Lombardía points out that in entering a couple, we can give up important parts of ourselves to make room for the other person. As a result, when the relationship ends, “those things we had pushed aside can resurface with force,” she says. “It can also happen that if the relationship, or the breakup itself, has taken a significant toll on us, the process leads us to rebuild ourselves and bring new sides of ourselves to light.”
