Flamingo Estate
Pleasure Principles
For Richard Christiansen, founder of the lifestyle brand Flamingo Estate, Pleasure Principles first began as a book about victory gardens, the gardens planted by citizens during wartime. He asked himself: “If we were to have a Victory Garden today, what would be fighting?” and realized the answer was a lot “slipperier” than an enemy country. “It’s the numbness that comes from scrolling all day. It’s the convenience that makes us forget where anything comes from. It’s our worship of speed and taste at the expense of smell, touch, and taste,” he writes in the book’s introduction. The book morphed into a much more interdisciplinary project, an antidote for the scrolling age that offers a “month-by-month guide to falling back in love with nature,” with planting and harvesting guides, seasonal recipes, tasks, stories, and more.
