As a Brit, I’m a lifelong devotee of a Mediterranean summer vacation—usually the South of France, one of the Balearic islands, or perhaps southern Spain or Portugal. Sardinia has increasingly been on my radar, and with direct flights launching from New York this summer, it was finally the moment to go. Given it was my first visit to the island, I wanted to see more than one version of it: the polished glamour of Costa Smeralda, the wild beauty of the Baunei Coast, and a smattering of countryside villages, too.
Piecing together an itinerary quickly became a delightful puzzle to solve; for me, it’s part of the joy of traveling. Between inspirational Condé Nast Traveler highlights and an Instagram algorithm serving up endless reels of seductively beautiful scenery, I amassed a long list of idyllic beaches, hidden coves, beach clubs, local restaurants, and dramatic mountain landscapes. With nine days to explore, we decided to hire a car and focus on the northeast of the island—though we planned a few boat days in between. I like a vacation with a little contrast: Enough of a plan to know there’s something good ahead, but enough left unknown for a sense of adventure. Somehow, a trip always feels longer when you don’t quite know what the next day will bring.
The Destination: Sardinia
The Airport Outfit: I travel often enough that I’ve finally determined the perfect travel uniform; it looks chic enough for me to feel put-together, but still is comfortable enough to survive a long-haul flight. My formula is an oversized blue button down from With Nothing Underneath, the Half Pipe jean from Mother denim–without question, the softest pair in my wardrobe—and my little Liffner suede tote, which I love more and more as it gets beaten up with time. My footwear of choice is the white Yuni Buffa ballet flats, which serve double duty as both my travel shoes and my evening shoes when paired with slip dresses.
